Now, what I'm interested in is the growth of blu-ray sales in the whole DVD markets.

Yeah once it gets over 85 for Blu they should do Blu vs DVD charts, though we'll be on the small size of the pie there lol

I think people might be surprised at how long it takes to have a big impact. People were buying into HD DVD before this without understanding the format war situation, and they will continue to do so. Badly informed, confused customers hugely outweigh the well informed and knowledgable. The badly informed will not change their behaviour because they won't know it has happened.

We can hope, though, that shop assistants, even the HD DVD fanboys, will not be able to justify actively selling HD DVD and will perhaps stop people from making a huge purchasing mistake.

This is a good point, but I think the industry will make some major changes because of Warner's exclusivity. If, and this is a big if, but if Universal goes neutral it will be a pretty fast downward spiral. January wasn't looking too good for HD-DVD even before the defection.

Well, it really depends now.

For WB to really increase the numbers in favor of Blu due to support will at earliest be in June.

Retailers dropping HD-DVD before hand (which is entirely plausible from yesterday forward) will make percentages dominate in Blu favor. I half expect a retailer to drop support of HD-DVD in the next 7 days.

Folks should not expect anything more than a GRADUAL deterioration in HD-DVD's share of sales. Remember, it will take a while for complete understanding of developments to spread through the larger population.

Yeah, that's expected, unless DUD's having a fire sale to clear stock. But even then, we've all seen them lose during fire sale week . I did guess something was up that DV will not be giving numbers anymore. Guess I won't be refreshing on Wednesday afternoon every minute for his numbers anymore lol.

I think there's still about 85% people who don't know the news and/or understand the impact it could have (people who have bought the 99$ Toshiba are not informed ..)

i think most people that own HD or BD know a bit about the industry. I am sure those that dont know much, still might go to google and find out why they cant buy disney movies on their new HD player they got for xmas.

What will be interesting to see is how many returns happen as it is still within most stores return policy period.

Personally, i think the jump will happen fast as in within the next 3 months.

I couldn't disagree more. There won't be a big change for the next month maybe, but this is the beginning of the end. The world has changed greatly in the past few years and when things change they do so almost immediately. Retailers know the score and they'll start abandoning HD-DVD as soon as they feasibly can. It won't matter that some consumers are still confused 4-6 weeks from now when HD-DVD shelf space has been cut by 75%. I wouldn't be surprised to see all catalog HD-DVDs below $9.99 very soon. That might spike the sales and the Nielsens but you'll know it's over and that it doesn't matter any more.

What do retails do with unsold units? Can they return them to Toshiba?
or they're stuck.
