Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (JP Super Blu-ray Box) Planned for December 18th 2016

Looks like I might hold off on importing Funimations ultimate collectors edition boxset of the Haruhi Suzumiya since it's just recently been announced Japan will be getting a "SUPER Blu-ray Box" of the anime on the 18th of December this year. No details yet regarding what the contents are but it's definitely going to be epic judging from the title of the boxset.

I'm good with Funis CE coming out soon. This will probably be better. But it will also be a lot more expensive. Got enough on my plate in the coming months in regards to anime that I will save for now.

- Gekisou (live concert)
- Gensou (orchestra concert)

No Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan in this set at the moment. It most likely won't be included but the live concert and orchestra concert makes some worthwhile additions I'm more interested in.

I like that it includes Disappearance and concerts. But will probably pick up FUNi's for now as it will include Disappearance of Nagato Yuki and it will be cheaper.

I already have the complete JP set and the US Disappearance, so I'll be getting Funi's version for the Nagato Yuki season.

A new 5.1 mix for Haruhi S1 is a waste of money that should have been spent on a better upscale without smearing.

I doubt Kadokawa is going to go through the trouble to get someone to give S1 another upscale when Q-TEC already did it for Kadokawa years ago. Q-TEC are the ones who upscaled S1, the company that loves to smear lines and apply DNR to anything they touch that's not already HD. They're only competent with HD-material.

Even with HD material they can show incompetence. I recall seeing a few scenes with some very obvious macroblocking on the 2016 Blu-ray of 'Macross Do You Remember Love?', which was authored by Q-TEC.

Now more official product information has been announced.

The super blu-ray boxset will contain the following:

Season 1 - with new 5.1 audio mix
Season 2
Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya Movie
Haruhi-chan Net Shorts
Chuyura-san Net Shorts
Gekisou Live Concert
English subtitles will also be included on the boxset but it will most likely only be on the TV episodes and possibly for the movie and shorts as well.

According to CDJapan, there will be an early pre-order bonus of an A3-size illustration board while Amazon Japan will be getting a store exclusive bonus canvas art board.

I'm still waiting to see if there will be more extra content on this Super blu-ray boxset, but so far it's a little underwhelming in terms of extras and not to mention the Gensou Symphony Concert is not included on this release. It's about on par with Funimation's UCE box release except that it contains the live concert and movie instead of the Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan series, so still undecided on which one I would buy. Had the Gensou Symphony Concert been included then I would've definitely pre-ordered Japan's super blu-ray boxset. :|

well well well, it looks like the Gensou Symphony Concert is included in the set after all! It's on the Nagato disc 3 from the boxset. Guess I will look into importing this set sometime soon then. Funny how it was never mentioned in the official product listing description.
