Default PG-13: Good, Bad, or Ugly?

PG-13, has it helped or hurt movies? What do you think?

Alot of movies it has hurt. Some should have been R rated. Case in point, Die Hard 4: Live Free Or Die Hard.

That's my point? Has PG-13 killed mature movies? Push them to the fringe and Oscar fests? That's my question.

I agree, but I see the bad too.

Without PG-13, would we have so many Comic films?

That's my thought?

ABSOLUTELY......

Studios are hand-cuffing directors in an attempt to reach a wider audience.... Obviously you want the movies to make money so the studios can put out more movies etc...... but I am completely against anyone changing the director's vision to try to make more money.......

absolutley not

so a movie cant have as many F-bombs, or other stronger language
or as many people with their heads blowing up
or as many sex scenes

boo-freakin-hoo

also, Live Free or Die Hard was the best of the 4 films
even bruce willis thinks so
look it up

I think its contrary to the Oscars as its typically dominated by 'R' rated films.

Slumdog Millionaire - R
The Wrestler - R
Milk - R
Frost / Nixon - R
The Reader - R
Rachel Getting Married - R
Changeling - R
Frozen River - R
Tropic Thunder - R
Revolutionary Road - R
Happy Go Lucky - R
In Bruges - R

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - PG13
The Visitor - PG13
Doubt - PG13
Dark Knight - PG13
Vicky Cristina Barcelona - PG13
The Duchess - PG13
Australia - PG13

WALL-E - G

It's become the new R. Which presents a host of problems.

1. More adult stuff pushed into PG-13.
2. R films that are more fringe and disgusting. ..Then they would be anyway.
3. Not seeing the finished film (Live Free or Die Hard) until home video.
4. Major films designed for teenagers, not adults.
5. Creating a larger gulf between blockbusters and serious fare.
6. The R film become an endangered species.

But, I don't see a better way either. So.. Who knows?

I don't care what Bruce Willis says....... the 4th one was terrible in my opinion because they used some gimmicky crappy "Hacker" plot..... and the "On-Star" scene etc.. were just further examples of why that was a dumb movie.....

I don't think the movie would have been better if it were "R" though.

From the list of PG13 movies that I listed for the Oscars, the only 2 there that could of been 'better' being 'R' rated would have to be:

The Dark Knight and Vicky Cristina Barcelona

It was. Have you seen the unrated one. Vastly superior. Watch it. Much better.

Agree 100%. I'm tired of so many movies being dumbed-down in order to get a PG-13 rating so that all of the kiddies can also see it (thus raising profits). Die Hard 4 was a PRIME example.

Imagine what Tropic Thunder would have been like if they were forced to meet a PG-13 rating?

No; F-bombs, nudity and exploding heads do not make a movie "better" per se, but sometimes they are needed to properly convey the story.

IMO, of course.

I'm sorry. Tropic Thunder was too much. PG-13 or not. The idea was unworkable. Panda gear, stabbing children? The retarded child?

But did the rating complicate that?

I don't believe in movie censorship so I'd have to agree that it's bad.

A Rating does not equal movie Censorship does it? The studio/director can still make any kind of movie they want. Yes, their audience will change but i do not beleive that equals censorship.

But, I don't see a better way either. So.. Who knows?

1. More adult stuff pushed into PG-13.-- True, material being put into PG-13 has increased. This is good for studios and directors as they have more freedom to make movies the way they want and still target a large audience. From a $$$ perspective, PG-13 often bring more profit then a R movie.

2. R films that are more fringe and disgusting. ..Then they would be anyway. --This is true.. When it comes to that it seems that some directors or studios are just trying to make movies standout for extreme amounts of violence, language, or sex. Really, the extremes of this nature are not needed.

3. Not seeing the finished film (Live Free or Die Hard) until home video. -- In some cases i would agree, in other cases the movie would still keep the same rating even if the full movie was shown in theaters. There are many reasons a movie may not be shown in "full" in the theaters.

4. Major films designed for teenagers, not adults.-- I do not think that every PG-13 movie, by todays standards equals a teenage movie. There are many PG-13 movies that are surpisingly violent or contain high amonts of language or sexual content.

5. Creating a larger gulf between blockbusters and serious fare.-- I think that there are many movies which can still be serious and can be a blockbuster. I think it is hard to distuingiush between the two. If anything, PG-13's allow directors and studios to add more to their movies to make them serious, still keep a large audience, and still go for the title of being a "blockbuster movie"

6. The R film become an endangered species. --There will always be people who will want to push the limits and make a move "R", despite what is allowed in the PG-13 Rating. If we get really good movies that are PG-13, maybe the R rating should only be limited to the few movies that fit that catagory. Most of the movies i enjoy are PG-13, compared to R.
