I've never seen it, but it sounds like it was quite the extraordinary production. Really looking forward to checking this one out.

I'll definitely buy this. It wasn't on my radar at all, but I trust you guys at the 3-D Film Archive implicitly at this point.
The reviews cited in that (very good) article make it sound like a Platoon of its day. If that's the case, I'm all over this film. But I have to wonder how it holds up after several decades of great, and increasingly realistic, war movies. Casting real soldiers is interesting. I've seen it backfire in the past because that authenticity the filmmakers were striving for was lost through the men "acting" their parts instead of being themselves. That could potentially date the film more than anything. The 3-D is the obvious draw, and of course the when and where it was filmed make it a fascinating piece of movie history. Did anyone here see it at the 2006 Expo? If so, what are your thoughts on the film and the 3-D? |

This sounds like it's going to look amazing in 3D.
The 3-D Film Archive article makes me think it will be a hell (excuse the language!) of a lot better than Dragonfly Squadron. Like all the other vintage 3D classics Kino are putting out, there's no way that this will ever be released in Region B so I will order this the minute it's available. |

I saw the picture in 3-D at the 2013 3-D Expo. The 3-D strength is typical of golden age 3-D films. Strong and immersive without hurting your eyes like the 80's films.
The soldiers aren't really convincing as "actors". It's pace and tone was unusual for a war film at the time, resembling a documentary moreso than a "hollywood" war movie (think of Battleground (1949) released 4 years earlier), but the dark noir-like cinematography was far better than what you'd see in a documentary. I wouldn't be surprised if this film influenced Anthony Mann when he made his underrated Korean war classic Men in War (1957). |

This is one of the few 3d movies i never scene. I took the street car to downtown Los Angeles, I believed it was the Warners theatre in the 50's. When i purchased my ticket there was a hand written sign saying not in 3d. I was so upset, i didn't go. Went to another theatre in the area. As far as i know there was no 3d showings in the Los Angeles area and i check the newspapers good. Finally ill get to see it.

Perhaps they had projection issues the day you attended?
CEASE FIRE was held over in 3-D for a second week at all three theatres. After that, it opened in 3-D at a number of other theatres in the area, including the UA and Valley in Pomona and the Imperial in Long Beach. Here's the closing day ad from the LA Times, January 26, 1954. ![]() |
