So, somebody frankensteined an old defective Marantz dvd player with the guts of a Panny UHD, just for looks? If he's that ambitious he should have looked into refurbishing the Marantz, considering it sounds like he's not actually gaining anything at this stage of the job.

I remember when it was common for boutiques to use panny and toshiba transports as the base for their players and just beef up the analog stages and what not. Even major brands have used rebadged competitor designs. I still can't fathom why Sony has outsourced even some of their BD player line in the past.

This is an common practice among 'specialty' brands. My fav was a cheap player mounted on shock absorbers priced at thousands of dollars.

I still remember when Lexicon took oppo's $400 bd-83 player, dropped it in their branded case, added a Lexicon remote and charged $3500 for it.
