Just saw that Kino was releasing this. Don't think it's been released in the U.S. since a VHS way back in the day. I've really been wanting to watch for a while as it's supposed to be the film that Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was based, of which I'm quite the fan. With that pedigree and its cast, it really seems right up my alley. I especially appreciate the first line of the Allmovie summary, "An exercise in "black humor" bordering on the tasteless".

If you're a fan of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, you should find Bedtime Story really interesting to watch. DRS is more than just based on Bedtime Story. Stanley Shapiro and Paul Henning, who wrote Bedtime Story, receive a screenplay credit on DRS alongside Dale Launer because so much of the original is retained for the remake including so many of the classic lines. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels sharpens things up a bit and has an added plot element that is not present in the original, and overall is the better film, but during your first viewing you'll probably spend a lot of time just being really intrigued at how closely the two films match up.

I'm also a big fan of DRS, but I love Bedtime Story and this release has been a very long time coming for me (like, almost 25 years, since I first caught it on the A&E Network!)

Yes, I was thinking of this as a lost film (I saw it on YouTube), it works a treat & Brando is really funny.

I hope it gets a European release.

Correct. It only had a VHS release so the 2K restoration on this upcoming blu-ray release will be a big step up.

I wonder if there have been some legal issues with the movie because up until at least May 2020, it wasn't available when Kino asked to license it:

Years ago, probably in the early 1990s, a buddy known to be a fibber told me about BEDTIME STORY, how it was just like DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, and that Brando played the Steve Martin role. I didn't believe him until I read about the movie years later. I still haven't seen it, so this will be a blind buy for me.

Who knows. It's possible they just didn't have an HD master prepared yet.

Anyway, I'm taking at least partial credit for them finally bringing this out because I've been harassing them for years about it.

Shirley Jones on blu ray is always a good thing.

I don’t want to sound greedy after Kino has already given us Never Steal Anything Small (previously only released on VHS) and Bedtime Story (previously only released on VHS) but I’d love to see Kino license her two remaining Universal movies: Fluffy and Dark Purpose.

And hopefully one day Warner Archive will give us A Ticklish Affair:

I remember seeing this at the Odeon Leicester Square. Films & Filming magazine gave it two stars, Sight and Sound gave it one star. So people generally liked it. And then it vanished. For Brando it was quite a departure but for David Niven it merely meant changing his name from Sir Charles Lytton to Lawrence Jamieson. I think the main problem with this film is its title - it sounds like a children's film.

This Blu-ray release is very welcome.

He wasn't fibbing that time. It is virtually identical in many ways. "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" was a very faithful remake, save for basically one twist.

I think both films are hysterical.
