Default Recommended Film Websites

As the new year approaches, I would like to show my appreciation to Bill Georgaris and his partner Vicki Platt for providing me with an amazing resource.

As Bill Georgaris states on his site's "About" page:

They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? (TSPDT) is a modest but growing film resource dedicated to the art of motion picture filmmaking and most specifically to that one particular individual calling the shots from behind the camera - the film director. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Kristin Thompson's and David Bordwell's Observations on film art blog is indispensable for discussing the evolution of different aspects of film-making such as technique, editing, framing, etc. from the silent era up to today.

Pretty much the only one I go to.

Horror site. Horror news, trailers, reviews, etc. I like it better than Bloody Disgusting or Dread Central.

Not quite a film website, but I have always enjoyed Cinema Treasures: http://cinematreasures.org/

Design is very outdated, but I always found this site very educational:

Not to question your choice, but I have always found their database to be confusing and impossible to search for anything in detail.

I have no doubt they have barrels of useful information, but I find accessing it is nearly impossible.

For instance, it should be a triviality to find all films with, say, a nomination for Best Supporting Actor and also Best Supporting Actress. The design of the search page makes it seem like this is doable. However, the results generated (if anything even comes up, it often arbitrarily does not work) are not what I am asking for (a basic example like this one can easily be checked as it is common knowledge).

What I wouldn't do to get all the information in, say, an R file. THAT would be useful beyond words.

There is a great app by Redwind Software for Oscar database. Unfortunately it hasn't been updated in like two years, so the past two years of winners aren't shown. I still refer to it all the time though. There is another one called Meet the Awards, but their aesthetic is terrible and it's just overall not as accessible as the other one, but it is updated.

https://criterioncloseup.com/ is one of my favorites...

http://www.vidiots.com too

http://thisorthatedition.com/ is a site which talks about different Blu-ray releases...look up a film and they will tell you the good and bad of this director's cut vs this standard release...

http://thecinemacafe.com/ This one is not from me...but I was referred to it last week in film noir thread....

Youtube is pretty much where it's at. It's a vast site. But with a little digging, you can find some pretty great vlogs out there. Just steer clear of those god-awful jumpcutters. They are the ones who give youtube a bad stigma.
