Default When will you run out of space?

Thought this might be a fun thread. I'm sure most of us have faced/are facing this issue.

I moved into my current place in 2017 and upon moving in built an entire wall of shelving in the spare bedroom, which meant I could have all my films on display in one place for the first time. 3 years later and those shelves are really filling up, despite the fact that I have a clear out of films every 6 months or so to try and get rid of anything I no longer want. I reckon with my buying habits I'll run out of space in the next couple of years and I'm trying to figure out what I'll do at that point (ideally move from our flat into a house).

When will you run out of space and what's the plan for when you do? Are you already taking measures to prevent yourself from running out of shelf space?

I ran out of shelf space about two years ago.

I’ve got a few crates full, and probably need to fill a few more.

Around two years ago here as well

I've just gone through another huge tidy up, two huge boxes full of HD-DVDs and even more DVDs (Anchor Bay, Blue Underground etc.) put into Slappa inserts and stowed away in those stackable plastic CD crates. 100 sleeves apiece, each insert holds two DVDs. Nice

I only have one tall Billy for DVDs now. The rest are all UHDs and BDs... but I still have eight storage boxes full of BDs.

I also already have this problem for 1 or 2 years now. I also try to get rid of DVDs and Blu's and I also have a full crate which no longer fit in my storage cabinets.

Ha, I ran out a while ago. I have a Billy bookcase for my Blu-rays, & it had lots of vintage 8mm cameras & movie figures (King Kong Frankenstein ect.) among the cases & it looked great, but the Blu-rays kept a'coming, so the cameras went & it still filled up. Now there's other shelves & cupboards full of discs...but I'm having a clear-out!

...& my buying has really slowed down. I'm mostly interested in older films, & there's not a lot I fancy being released these days.

I have space for about another 400 blu rays. At the rate i buy now, that will take me at least 5 years to fill. Who knows what shape the physical media market will be in at that point, my plan is to stop buying when i run out of space.

I keep most of my collection (more than half of which is composed of dozens of DVD boxsets of different directors) in removable boxes under the television.

I guess I have space for about 50-100 more blu-rays/DVDs, with the current storage method of putting them in boxes.

This topic reminds me of one advantage of DVD/blu-ray boxsets of film directors though, instead of individual releases. As most of the my DVD collection are boxsets of different film directors - at least the current collection doesn't use up that much space relative to the amount of films.

Oh we’re way past that now, already have two 400+ binders full of discs and likely will be needing another one soon.

How does one look for flats and then factor in space for Blu-rays, film books, and everyday life stuff?

I live alone so I've had the freedom to add to my collection to my heart's content without worrying about a better half objecting. I also don't host many visitors so I don't worry about what people would say - not that that's ever been an issue personally

I currently have seven Atlantic Maxsteel 12-tier shelves creatively arranged in my living room. It looks like a Blockbuster Video and I love it. Only occasionally do I think about what it would be like if I ever get married and maybe have to get rid of most of my collection but that's just a fleeting thought once in a blue moon.

I've had to get creative with my large collection, often having to get rid of doubles and pairing up others into homemade combo packs. Whenever I make a successful pairing and eliminate one or even two of the same titles it feels like a major triumph I've also jettisoned a good chunk of titles and given a lot of them away, mostly DVDs. One thing I'll NEVER do is put my collection away in boxes or closets. I love looking at my shelves full of great movies. It brings me joy

This is what I desperately want to avoid. When living at my parents' home my collection was stacked up all over the place; double stacked on shelves mostly with several large CD wallets filled with discs. Moving into my own place I always planned to have one place with all of my films and I've had that for 3 years and should do for a couple more. There are other walls where I could put more shelves but honestly I don't want to do that to the other half! Instead I've tried to be a bit more selective in my purchases (which hasn't really worked) and more realistic about what films I'm actually going to revisit.

I do actually have my Blus, DVDs and 4Ks on separate shelves on the wall. I won't be buying anymore DVDs (haven't bought any for about 7 years and only have a handful left) but the Blu section has room for just a handful of films; the 4K is where I have a couple of years of space. Blu is where I'll be looking to get rid of things in the short term but I've already had a few rounds of cut down.

Ebay has been a good resource over the past few years. I’ve sold quite a bit to make more space (and make a bit of money back).
When you have loads of region 1 anime dvd sets taking up space (most are 5 or 6 cases in a box, so not small), many of which will either never be watched again or have been superseded by blu-ray versions, so out they go.

After years of not selling anything I've found it really satisfying selling stuff. The money is always welcome and the remaining collection feels of a higher quality.

Unfortunately all the buying and selling has prevented me from keeping my collection on here up to date.

Your situation was similar to mine. I lived with my Sister in a 3 bedroom apartment, then she moved into a smaller 2 bedroom and I was confined to the living room! Finally had enough and moved out. Been living in my own place for close to 5 years now. I also dreamed of moving out and into a home large enough that would easily accomodate my large collection and I've achieved that - mostly.

Try to combine formats. I've reduced my 4K UHD "footprint" by removing UHD discs from the packaging and placing them in the Blu-ray cases. I've actually had to get rid of the Blu-ray discs in some cases where the case only had space for 1 disc in favor of the UHD. Sometimes I've reluctantly removed a beloved edition, like my copy of the Jaws digibook Blu-ray, to make room. In another glorious move, I took the HEAT Blu-ray disc out of the crappy eco pack and put the disc inside a premium steelbook from a Czech release. In one instant I added a slot to my shelves

I have enough space for around 80 more titles on my current unit. Hopefully that'll keep me going till next year but probably not likely when I want to build my UHD collection. I live with parents but when I'm nearly out of space I'll buy another unit as I can fit one more in the bedroom. One thing I have to factor in is my CD collection in which I have around 130 titles.

The DVD's I have are in storage boxes.
