Default Do You Think Less of Blu-rays Now That 4K Is Here?

I've only been immersed in UHDs and 4K a couple of weeks but I'm already starting to think of regular Blu-rays the same way I think of DVDs. Well, not really, but every time I buy a new UHD I kind of picture myself rolling my eyes if the only option for a new title was BD. I guess I'm going to be rolling my eyes quite a bit because not everything will be available in 4k, as evidenced by Warner's UHD cancellation of Geostorm, plus back catalog rollout has been painfully slow, but the format is new so I suppose we should let it grow and take hold. Still, this doesn't change the fact that I no longer feel the same way about BD as I did even just a month ago. On the upside, many 4K players do a fantastic job of upconverting regular 1080P content so there's that. The Spy Who Loved Me looks great on my Oppo.

No, I don't think less of them. I have a good size collection of blu-rays, so I'll never be able to replace every blu-ray with 4K. They still look fantastic to me, so I'll enjoy them to the end.

I'm completely sold on UHD and I always feel a little bummed when I want to watch a movie and it's not available in the format. But nearly every time I put in a BD I still think it looks great.

Blu-ray can still look great, but it's on a case-by-case basis of course. There are certain bitrate-starved Blu-rays - mostly Warner Bros. titles - that can be hard to watch when there's a 4K alternative.

Nevertheless, even when I watch some of the best Blu-rays the format has to offer, I sometimes find myself missing the textural precision and the HDR/WCG of 4K.

I will buy the 4K version over blu-ray version of any new release moving forward. So in a way, I guess I do think less of blu-ray now..

Likewise, I am completely sold on 4K with HDR. I am just bummed out that it's obvious some movies will likely never make the jump as (and this is just my opinion) the film doesn't warrant that type of transfer/upgrade. I am specifically thinking about a lot of dramas that I would like on the format only because they are some of my favorite movies ever... a lot of older and foreign flicks - Korean BDs feel like a rare occurrence so I can't see 4K making it big over there for some of the titles that I adore.

Yes and no.

UHD is always the option when available to purchase.

I’ll be fine if Blu is the last format for some of my favorites.

I've been watching UHD's in action since May 2015, owned a 4K tv since 2013. I now own 87 UHD's, and I've seen noticeable improvements on every single one. Yes: every. single. one. Including the DNR'ed ones like Oblivion and 3:10 to Yuma! They might have less detail but HDR really transforms them. That being said, I'm not going to stop buying blu-rays at all but I will be upgrading every movie in my collection if possible (because there WILL be a lot of movies that will never make it to UHD), and I basically get them for free once I sell off my old blu ray and the digital code. I'm really in love with the format, movies look better than I ever thought I would be able to have in my house, and honestly I get super bummed when people say they won't be supporting it cause of "2k upscale" or "HDR gimmick," or "blu ray is good enough." Remember people said the same things about blu ray at first!

...well, actually I'm not bummed, I just think it's funny! You can watch your blu-rays if you want and I'll happily sit here and watch my UHD's.

So long story short, I suppose I do think less of blu rays. But I'm still buying more blu's than UHD's.

Not at all. 1080P as streamed from a Blu-Ray disc still looks incredible to me (depending on the transfer of course), just not to the extent of a respectable 4K transfer as streamed from a disc (or even from an online source, such as VUDU), especially if HDR has been skillfully and tastefully applied to the latter. It's like the difference between $1B and $2B; there's certainly a difference, but I think we'd all be more than content with "only" $1B. So, while I'll always get the 4K version of a title that I want if it's available, I won't hesitate to get a title on 1080P Blu-Ray Disc if that's the best physical format on which it's available and will be available for the foreseeable future.

How do you stream from a disc? If you're watching from a disc, you ain't streaming.

No way. Most of the titles I buy aren't getting a release on UHD, so it's no problem at all. If you get into the movie, I usually forget about it.

Somewhat. I still consider Blu-ray a good way to watch a movie. I'd still much rather watch Blu-ray than stream or download a movie. If I have the option of UHD though, I'm picking that every time. If not, Blu-ray is fine but they are definitely feeling like the lesser format now.

I've really started to pull back on my Blu-ray buying because I don't want to double dip. I skipped buying Rogue One because I know a 4k release is inevitable.

For movies that I know have no chance at a 4k release, I'll still grab those on Blu-ray.

I do have a hard time justifying a BD purchase now but I certainly don't think they're bad in terms of their quality. I just watched The Equalizer the other night and it looked great. Didn't have that HDR-loveliness of course but it was still a fantastic image.

There aren't that many movies I'm interested in owning that I don't already have. So for the most part, I'm just buying the new releases I want, which do get released in UHD the vast majority of the time.

I do wish catalogue titles were released more frequently though. So many I'd love to see on the format.

Not really. The best thing is I don't have to worry about DVDs included anymore.

Data can be said to be streamed from any type of source; it's just that the word "stream" has become colloquially synonymous with receiving data from online sources. However, its literal meaning, in regard to data transmission, is simply to continuously transmit data from a source to a destination. When playing video from a disc, data is being continuously transmitted from a disc (i.e. the source) to a playback device. The word "stream" is inappropriate only when data is stored in a playback device itself (i.e. video stored on an internal hard drive).

You know how DVDs lasted another 10 years and are still rolling at retail? It's going to be the same way with BD. They aren't going anywhere. Many things aren't going to have a UHD disc release going forward.

The only problem is I just don't see stores having the shelf space to support three formats. Something has got to give. It's time for DVDs to go away. But that's what regular folks buy still.

Who's up for some antics?

Anyhoo, "yes and no" is my answer. Modern movies finished on a DI tend to look very one dimensional on Blu-ray vs their UHD counterparts, the colour is usually influenced by a heavy green or yellow tint on Blu (probably because it comes across better in the more limited colour gamut & volume of SDR 709) whereas UHD is more nuanced and neutral-looking.

But older shows that were finished on film still look fantastic on Blu, they don't strictly need HDR just a damned good transfer & encode.
