Directed by William A. Wellman (The Story of GI Joe), the superb cast includes James Whitmore as a bantam rooster of a Sergeant, and Van Johnson as a wisecracking PFC (as in "Praying for Civilian"). Fun fact: The soldier that gets left under the jeep and later freezes to death is Ricardo Montalban who of course later plays Khan in Star Trek.

I was astounded that this movie was filmed completely indoors.

The fact that it wasn't even nominated for Art/Set Direction is a crime against humanity.

I don't think I'll double dip this, but fans and curious cinephiles who don't own the DVD should definitely indulge. No doubt it'll be a great viewing experience in HD. The cinematography is the film's best asset, IMO.

Yes, I understand it was a refrigerated set.

This should go very nicely with They Were Expendable, & roll on Destination Tokyo (1943).

One of my favorite war movies. Gritty, stark and actually believable considering its Hollywood. Now if they can just get the UNCUT version of The Victors done, I'll be happy.

I don't remember which movie. He told us about it at the 2004 Twilight Zone Convention. Wellman's thumb was broken in the scuffle too.
