Default J.J. Abrams Is Finished With Reboots

I've been wondering how long it was going take for Abrams to realize that he needs to stop doing remakes and reboots and actually create something original. Just about every movie and television series he's created has been some sort of reboot or remake of something that had previously been created.

Lost, Super 8, Cloverfield, Star Trek, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Mission Impossible, Alcatraz ... these have all been remakes, reboots or re-imaginings of movies or television shows that have already been created or based off something that had been created by someone else.

Quote:
You know, I feel incredibly lucky to have gotten involved in things that I loved when I was a kid. In fact, even Westworld, which we’re here for tonight, is one of them. But I don’t feel any desire to do that again. I feel like I’ve done enough of that that I’m more excited about working on things that are original ideas that perhaps one day someone else will have to reboot.
He also added that storytellers, even those working in familiar arenas, should always push things forward:

Quote:
You know, I do think that if you’re telling a story that is not moving anything forward, not introducing anything that’s relevant, that’s not creating a new mythology or an extension of it, then a complete remake of something feels like a mistake.
While I have enjoyed some of the work that Abrams has done, I'm generally not fond of a lot of his work, which has taken too many liberties with the characters that were created by other filmmakers. Mission Impossible, Person of Interest, Revolution, Fringe, Alias ... these were all pretty good films and television shows. But most of his work, like the rebooted Star Trek films, the remade The Force Awakens (re: A New Hope) ... he just took too many liberties and tried to create his own universe by calling it his.

But, I'm glad that he's going to be branching out and creating some original films and television shows that, hopefully, won't be remakes or reboots of something else.
