Mainly for my collection of DVDs.
Sadly, a lot of my older DVDs (TV series, being a big culprit) don't have "DVD subtitles"... just closed captions. This was never a problem when I used a standard DVD player, since I'd just enable the closed captions on my TV. However, as you guys are probably aware, CCs no longer exist as far as HDMI is concerned. I've never tried hooking up a Blu-Ray player up with standard-definition, but using component or HDMI automatically disables the CC decoder built into my TV. Are there any Blu-Ray players on the market that can decode the CC data from DVDs and display them on-screen like the regular subtitles? I'm not aware of any but I thought I'd ask as it would be really useful. As it is I have to play those old DVDs on my computer and use software like Media Player Classic which has a decoder. |

i also use both cc and subtitles
i have a panasonic dmp bdt 210 and have it hooked up through hdmi and rca cables at the same time when i play blu ray i use hdmi when i want to watch a dvd without subtitles using the c.c i set my tv to a/v or rca input not all blu rays players output both signals at once but mine does of course the dvd will not be upconverted it will be standard def but if you have a hearing problem and need c.c this is the way to go if your blu ray player does not output like this use an old dvd player hooked with rca cables to watch movies with c.c |

What I heard is that FCC will require all manufacturers to add a CC decoder into new players starting in 2014 so HDMI can be used to watch DVDs with CC if available.

Since almost all Blu-ray titles released since 2006 has a subtitle feature that can be turned on, this close caption feature is a non issue for Blu-ray titles. Most DVD’s also have subtitle options that are better than close caption feature (one can choose English, English SDH, etc). The close caption feature only becomes important on a DVD title and Blu-ray title that does not have a subtitle option feature. The theory is that some Blu-ray’s or DVD’s might also be encoded with close caption on the disc if the subtilte feature does not exist.
As far as I am aware there is no FCC mandate to require close caption decoders in Blu-ray and DVD players. Since all new Blu-ray titles and DVD titles have advanced subtitle features already, mandating the feature on all new players would cost the consumer electronics industry to much money. At this time only products that contain a built in ATSC/QAM tuner are mandated by the FCC to have a close caption decoder built in. Standalone 480i DVD recorders that are currently on the market with a built in ATSC/QAM tuner have close caption built in, however when one attempts to playback the recording the close captioning feature on some models might not work since the close caption is sometimes a feature of the ATSC tuner and not designed to work from a DVD recording. If we every do see standalone Blu-ray recorders released in the United States with a ATSC/QAM tuner they will be required to have a close caption decoder. Problem is, that's simply not true at all. Not *all* new BD and DVD titles have the "advanced subtitles" (SDH). It is true that most studio releases have them, but a lot of other stuff, including MOD titles like Warner Archive, almost all of Olive, Shout, and some Twilight Time titles, don't have any subtitles at all.

Then there is the other problem. Some very small studios release movies and documentaries with no subtitles on the disc and no close captioning at all encoded on the disc. The studios that are releasing the Blu-rays and DVDs without subtitles and no close captioning at all is the real problem. People that want advanced SDH subtitles on all Blu-ray and DVD discs should be complaining to the studios that release the discs. It would be really frustrating if someone needed advanced SDH subtitles or close captioning and the discs did not have them at all.

Subtitles and closed caption are two different things. Subtitles only convey what is voiced by the actors nothing else. Closed captioning relates everything happening on the screen. One example is a musical where the songs which are integral to the plot of the story, they are not subtitled. There are other examples as well. The point is subtitles do not tell the whole story. And yes NOT all movies are subtitled!
I love blurays and the quality is great. However, Bluray player do NOT support Closed Captioning. Which makes it impossible for everyone to enjoy movies. When blurays came out this was a HUGE oversight. It should be mandated that ALL Bluray players be able to support Closed Captioning! Figure out a way! |

DVD players do not have closed captioning either. DVD recorders with a built in tuner do. SDH subtitles offer the same information as closed captioning (non dialog info and other info). So if the studios all drop standard subtitles and use SDH subtitles for all new releases then this would solve the problem and work on all old Blu-ray players.

Although I'm not hard-of-hearing, I've always been interested in how captions are done and always watch my movies at least one time with them on. I have my Oppo BDP-93 player hooked up with both HDMI and component so that I can switch to the component at 480i to access captions and switch to HDMI at 1080p otherwise. The problem is that many Blu-Ray players have NO analog video outputs AT ALL, only HDMI, so these should include a closed-caption decoder. All my computer's DVD playback programs include them, so it doesn't seem too difficult or expensive to do. Even if the discs include subtitles, sometimes the captions are different transcriptions and many discs still have standard closed captions only (such as titles from Shout Factory.)
BTW some of the earlier Blu-Ray titles from Sony and Fox actually do have standard TV-decoded closed captions on them! It's kind of strange since you can only see them if you set your player to down-rez to 480i, but they're there! FCC requirements only apply to equipment that receives broadcast TV- since about 1993, anything that gets TV stations has to be able to display the captions that go with them, but that doesn't cover any type of media. I've already bought an external closed-caption decoder in the event analog caption decoders ever disappear from future TVs, so I can still access the captions on my old analog tapes and discs. |

Sorry that I didn't introduce myself first. I am Deaf. I made my first post in this thread last year. This thread is about BD players that support CC for deaf people like myself naturally. Two more posts to go before I can post the links...

Interesting... I didn't know the PS3 supported closed captions. Got any idea how to activate them? I do own a PS3 so I can try it out.
Thanks for the research though! When I eventually upgrade this aging Samsung player in my home theater, I'll consider getting one of those. |
