Is 2D Dead?

Despite the temporary lack of 3d TVs, there are currently hundreds of 3d titles with thousands of installed displays. VR helmets and glasses free displays are constantly in a state of development, so interest could hardly be said to be dying. Hopefully what we are witnessing is the slow eagerly anticipated death of two dimensional entertainment.

Weird title is weird and I've always thought 3D was a bit streakish in popularity.

A cheeky thread, but it gives me the opportunity to restate that 2D absolutely is dead to me.

I'm happy to watch them for free, or pick them up for pennies in charity shops, but otherwise I won't buy new 2D movies in any format or pay to see them in the cinema, I consider them as having zero value. Utterly worthless. Just like 2D TVs.

I will buy the odd remastered 2D catalogue title (just got Raising Cain yesterday, and Lair Of The White Worm is on its way) but nothing that was made since home 3D became possible. The sheer quality of the 3D I get at home has effectively served to completely devalue 2D.

It may be viewed that I'm simply trying to spin the recent negative threads into something positive, but the fact remains that we are constantly trying to push 2 dimensional entertainment into the 3rd dimension with greater success as time goes on. Why not view that as a trend that will inevitably come to fruition? Who really wants flat entertainment?

It's a bit of a fad that's overstayed its welcome and a cumbersome process at best, but what I hate about it is how they try to force it on us at every turn. I think eventually this bubble has to burst.

To give a recent example, the 3D Dreamworks movie Trolls: They're releasing it on Dvd, Blu-ray, UHD, and Digital Ultraviolet. Do we really need to flatten a 3-D movie and release it in like 4 separate 2d formats?

I find it ironic that anyone would try to defend 2D of any kind or try to put down folks that enjoy 3D.

It must be similar to the way the trendsetters felt when they started watching their "televisions" (Bob & Brenda have one of those new gimmick t.v.s! That's just a fad. Radio will always reign supreme.) "color televisions" (Bob & Brenda have a "colorized" television now! How redundant! Why can't they just appreciate black & white broadcasts?) "stereophonic sound" (Bob & Brenda have a stereo now! What the hell? Isn't monophonic sound good enough for them?) "3D TV" (Bob & Brenda have a 3D TV now! Don't they realize that the Earth is flat and that's how movies should be watched?) etc...

I have a 3D button on my Remote and I'm not afraid to use it.

Just make sure you switch to 'Cinema' for stronger 3D on LGs.

I have an older plasma LG. I haven't messed with other settings to try and improve the auto-convert, thanks for the reminder.

I think HDR is dead. It requires calibration, changes how the film originally looked, even calibrated its changes are marginal to none existent, some tvs don't have the capability and manufactures want extra for it. Studios are doing bad post conversion hdr and overall marketing HDR with the same terrible way they marketed 3d. When HDR makes it to theaters what are the odds they stick an extra $5 charge for HDR just like 3d?

HDR has basically all of the problems 3d has plus the added problem of being even harder to notice than 3d.

2D died for me when I saw Avatar in theater, my first real 3D movie experience. Although most content, including lots of "3D", is shot for 2D, it's forever an inferior cinematic language. Hopefully, more future directors and cinematographers will learn its technical skills and story-telling value than what we see in the market today.

2d dies for me when i finally got to see the light at the American theme parks and watched Terminator, Captain Eo Muppet's 3d ! How can a flat image compare to that !

The only way 3d will be mas adopted in houses for normal tv sets is if we get 3d sets that are glasses free that can handle multiple people without issue. Until then it is going to be a niche. It can be a profitable niche I feel, but they have to start producing a small number of sets again for that to continue.

2d isn't going anywhere. Even if all the above happens and everyone ran out and bought a new tv that could do it and everyone shoot in 3d going foward, we would still have 100 years of 2d content. Even then, some people do not have stereo vision, thus 3d in no way benefits them.

With that said the tv manufacturers need to reintroduce 3d to there sets if they expect me to have any interest any time in the next 10 years. If they don't by then i'll probably be going vr.

Kind of amusing to me that after making The Bloody Brood with Peter Falk director Julian Roffman made The Mask, a movie that Peter Falk couldn't enjoy.

Yes glasses free will be necessary, and it already has a miniature representative in the Nintendo 3ds. It has to be something that can be on all the time also. I don't see how it will handle front of screen but maybe that will just have to wait.

Personally I've never really understood these kind of 'extremist' views that some people hold regarding 2D VS 3D.
To me the general rule is to watch any film as close to how the filmmakers intended it to be viewed as possible. Basically if it's shot for 2D then I watch it in 2D. If it's shot for 3D then I watch it in 3D.

To revisit, my LG plasma has a setting labeled "extreme" that I found to give the best results while "cinema" gave the mildest results. I watched some Nero Wolfe mysteries and it achieved what I would call "medium" 3d.
