Default I feel I am getting addicted to buying Blu-ray's

Ever since I got a blu ray player in 2014 I feel like I've become addicted to buying blu ray's. I tend to look for good prices and many of my blu ray's I have gotten for 4.99 and some for 3.99. I can go weeks or a few months without buying a blu ray but then feel the urge to buy one. My prized blu ray is The complete collection of The Twilight Zone. This site has been so valuable for me in helping me to find great deals. Before I started buying blu ray's I had bought dvd's but had stopped buying them when I had bought an HD TV years ago and the picture quality looked like crap. Movies have always been a way to escape from my life especially as a very shy person. Luckily I try to stay on budget but wonder why physical media has such a pull over me. Have no desire to buy digital copes of movies and when I die someday noone is going to care about my collection. Since this is a blu ray site figured that some of you could relate to what I'm saying.

Yeah I find it a bit addicting. Just some love of collecting I guess. I feel like it can be a social thing, having people look through the collection and find stuff they hadn't seen in forever or always having a good quality version of something awesome to show them. Most people I know are movie nerds so it works out well for that. But sometimes I feel it's a little pointless. Still somehow I enjoy it as an excercise in itself.

Glad you enjoy collecting blu ray's . It's great you know people who love movies. I have a family member who always questions my buying blu ray's, though that doesn't stop me.

Welcome to the club. It only gets worse once you realize how much better BD is compared to DVD.

It's better than being addicted to alcohol or anything else that's bad for your health..

Thanks. I was so excited when I found this site 2 years ago. So glad to have found a place where there are like minded movie people.

So true about it being better than other addictions. I do not smoke or drink and never have. I also don't know anyone that buys blu's except me.

This site is made up of people who enjoy not just watching and collecting movies as a hobby but as a way of life. Personally, I don't enjoy staying up until 4 in the morning at a club or hanging out on street corners smoking whatever - I get my kicks from watching and discovering films and acquiring Blu-rays - this is why I spend a lot of time here - plenty of people of the same mindset. Sometimes it gets rowdy but that's also part of the fun

Collecting Blu-rays, for a person who loves movies, is indeed addicting. As long as you don't skip making bill payments, the rent is taken care of and you have plenty of food in your pantry, there's nothing wrong with this. It's a healthy addiction - one that keeps bringing you joy day in and day out and doesn't harm you physically. A couple of things to keep in mind so that you don't overdo it:

Buy Blu-rays of films you believe you'll watch (and enjoy) multiple times. The occasional blind buy is OK but if you have Netflix or any other subscription-base service try to watch a film on it first before plunking down money for a physical copy. You'll save yourself a lot of regret later.

Unless you're very impatient, wait a few weeks after a Blu-ray's release date before picking up a copy. A better edition might come along with more extras, plus you will find better prices on the secondary market.

One last piece of advice: NEVER let anyone put you down about your hobby. You'll encounter plenty of people who will, incredulously, question why you buy movies - their opinions are JUST opinions, as misinformed as they are they will never understand why you do it so there's no point in trying to explain it to them. Good luck and happy collecting!

Be careful with this statement. Stores with exclusives such as bonus discs or steelbooks can sell out before the day is out.

Be careful, don't end up buying a lot of blind buys (movies you've never seen before) and they turn out to be bad, and then you'll be wasting your money.

I think with dvd I was starting to fear that. I had way too many and ended up unloading almost all of them when I started buying blus, but then became a LOT more discriminating when I took stock and realized life's too short to buy anything I won't rewatch every couple of years. I'm down to around 200 skus and have just a few catalogue titles on the horizon and I buy maybe two to three titles new titles per year.

It's definitely an addiction, although I try to be sensible about it by researching my blind buys and by only purchasing discs with money in my bank account instead of using a credit card.

I've been posting on Blu-ray.com for almost four years now, and I consider many of the people here to be friends, but I'm not Facebook friends with anybody here, and I've never met anybody here outside the site. I rather like the "Alcoholics Anonymous" vibe that we all have here.

Welcome to the club. When joining the site 6 years ago, I never knew I'd turn into the Blu-ray enthusiast that I have become. It's been a fun journey though, and has also greatly expanded my knowledge of film. It's really become a lifestyle!

Yeah, sell those after you're done watching them too. Doesn't pay to clutter space by holding on to something you didn't like.

I don't think you have a big addiction based on that statement but as others have said, if this is your hobby then enjoy it! Collecting movies and having a library is a blast!

I'm lucky if I can make it through the day without picking something up on here.

I put the brakes on this year. I have only purchased 7-8 blu-rays so far, which is nothing compared to previous years.

I always make sure to only spend what I can afford and would never want to get into debt over my collection. Movies have always brought me joy. I am not a blind buy person and very rarely have bought a blind buy. I always wait for a price drop on blu ray's and never pay full price. The few Criterion blu's I own I waited for the yearly barnes and noble 50 percent off sales. Have to admit that animated films are my weakness and have spent 19.99 on some Disney animated classics. My favorite movies are films from the 30's and 40's. 1939 in my opinion was the best year for films.
