Nothing in the government call for comments matches the headline of the article. I think it's far more likely we'll start seeing illegal streams banned at a network level than these boxes being banned.

Kodi being an open source software wants very much to be a legitimate way to stream legal media. The fact that it's used as a platform for bootlegging is unfortunate but Kodi can put parameters in place if it wants to stop that. Kodi does have some useful features like being a nice frontend for personal media servers. The software itself being made illegal would be ridiculous. Cutting off the supply of pirated links that lead to the illegal content seems like a far more logical solution.

Where did I declare anything, let alone that the "sky was falling?"

The only thing I posted is a link to the article, and the title of the thread is just me quoting the headline of the article...

He didnt' say that, but tech news writers are notorious for writing click-bait, incendiary headlines that aren't reflective of the details actually being reported.

Not OP's fault. In fact this thread title ends with a question mark.

Yes I understand, but that very question in the thread title was answered in the article itself.

Maybe that was the point in writing the article in the first place, to answer the question?

And maybe the point in my posting it was just to spur discussion?

If you have a problem with the article (which I posted over 5 weeks ago I might add), try the 2nd and see if there's something you can add here.

Sorry, didn't mean to derail your discussion. I have no problem with the article and already added my input. I have nothing more to add. Please carry on

Sorry. eBay cares too much about their seller fees to stop the complete sale of these boxes. They will still show up on eBay, not because the seller was sneaky enough to avoid being caught, but because eBay will not forfeit the seller fees. After how many of these boxes that were already sold on eBay for the past few years, and all the fees that eBay collected from the sellers, are they now going to stop the sale of them. It won't happen. You can still buy digital HD movie codes on eBay.

"Following a growing number of complaints from right-holders and broadcasters, the UK's Intellectual Property Office, or IPO, is purportedly holding a number of meetings to decide whether the law needs to be changed to tackle the popularity of Kodi boxes."

In other words, the studios are paying big bucks in lobbying fees in order to "convince" lawmakers to outlaw Kodi boxes.

Sorry. The studios shouldn't be deciding what's legal or not. If you don't want your material copied or distributed, then get out of that business.

That's kind of ridiculous. Studios are the ones paying billions to make this content, they should have a say in how it's used. While I don't think they should get the only say, it's not unreasonable for them to want boxes that are pre-loaded with apps to pirate content off the market. In all three cases on this page, they're only looking to ban boxes pre-loaded with piracy apps, not the general boxes.

Such bans won't stop the sale of these boxes. eBay still has them, the sellers simply use different wordings in their titles to sell the boxes. I'm really against studios lobbying lawmakers, because that's what they did when Digital Audio Tape (DAT) came out. They killed that format.

Again, what value do you see to these boxes besides piracy? Because the non-piracy version of these boxes can still be sold.

All version of these boxes, stock or jailbroken, are still for sale on eBay. eBay won't stop them from selling them. They can say that to appease studios, but they won't stop them completely.

Right, but your argument was "The studios shouldn't be deciding what's legal or not." In this case, what harm is there in trying to ban piracy boxes?

It's called piracy because of studios lobbying lawmakers to make laws that call it piracy. Once you buy something it's yours to do whatever you want with it. Piracy was invented by studios who want to get money for their material anyway they can. If it wasn't for them, piracy wouldn't exist. It would simply be called open and free sharing.
