What are everyone's thoughts on Dolby 3D vs IMAX Digital 3D? Which do you prefer overall for 3D? Alita Battle Angel is in theaters now showing both 3D technologies in many areas, so don't miss out on this chance to see Dolby 3D on "AMC Dolby Cinema" Laser projectors.
Note, most IMAX theaters use IMAX Digital 3D using linear polarization filters to separate the image to each eye, which is the primary IMAX 3D technology I'm comparing to (https://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmXoypizjW3WknF...AX_venues.html). 15/70mm IMAX uses either similar linear polarization filters or shutter glasses. For the few IMAX Laser projectors installations out there, IMAX Laser actually also uses Dolby 3D. Which 3D do you prefer, IMAX Digital 3D (with polarization filters) or Dolby 3D (with color spectrum separation filters). My Dolby 3D vs IMAX Digital 3D Comparison comments: Big 3D fan and AMC AList member here. Wife and I regularly watch 3D movies in theater on IMAX 3D and REALD... and movies at home on our LG 65" 65C6P OLED (best 3D quality available) and LG 86" 86UH9500 (both TVs use passive 3D). We saw Alita, on Monday 2/11, in Dolby 3D at our local AMC Dolby Cinema (laser projector system). This was my first Dolby 3D viewing. I thought the Dolby 3D brightness, color, and contrast picture quality was the best I've ever seen in 3D in a theater (and would rank IMAX Digital 3D in second place in these categories). However, to my eyes, something was slightly off in the overall 3D clarity, motion, and depth. I could definitely see the 3D, but it was like my eyes were having a tough time dialing in the 3D depth in a clean and smooth way... and in motion it seemed to stutter more than normal. I don't know how to explain it but the 3D did not look as smooth, clear, and natural as IMAX 3D and RealD 3D to me (although the brightness, color, and contrast were better). Note, IMAX 3d and Real 3D use polarized filters to separate the image to each eye while Dolby 3D uses color spectrum separation to separate the image. As of right now, I think polarized filters look smoother to my eyes. However, note my wife said she thought the Dolby 3D looked good and she is still undecided between IMAX 3D and Dolby 3D. Also for comparison, I thought Alita is a top notch movie for 3D visuals and overall image quality. In summary, I think IMAX 3D is still my personal preference for the best theater 3D due to the cleaner 3D image from polarized filters to my eyes. However, I need to see more Dolby 3D to confirm. I want to like Dolby 3D more considering its brightness and image quality look great. Also Dolby 3D has done some Glasses Free 3D development and has a partnership with James Cameron's company (https://www.dolby.com/us/en/technologies/dolby-3d.html). I'm planning to see Alita two more times actually... next in IMAX 3d, and then one more time again in Dolby 3d at a different Dolby AMC theater to see if a different projector makes a difference. I will report back. What are your thoughts on Dolby 3D vs IMAX Digital 3D? Last edited by Oled3D>4kBD>2kBD; 02-13-2019 at 04:06 PM. |
