Anyone have some suggestions for the best way to clean a bly-ray plaer laser lens? My beloved Samsung BDP-2500 is starting to stutter on discs and I suspect a dirty laser lens is the culprit. No shortage of dust in my home, I live in the southern Arizona desert. And I have 2 mid sized dogs that also bring in dust & shed hair. Worst of all, I smoke cigarettes. I do have an air purifier that I run in the evenings. I vacuum the charcoal based pre-filter monthly and it's amazing how much dust & dog hair it collects. Ditto when I vacuum the carpet.
I've read that those lens cleaning discs designed for DVD & CD players that use brushes can damage the lens on the BD player as the lens is much closer. I see one on Amazon made by Maxell that claims it's designed for BD players & PS3. It says it uses a "wind funnel cleaning technology and uses no harsh chemicals or brushes". But it's a little pricey at $17, and if air will do the trick I have an air compressor and couldn't I just use that to blow out any dust? Or would an air compressor be too strong and possible knock the laser out of alignment? Can you reach the lens with an Q-tip ear swab, and if I used alcohol on the swab would that damage the lens? Thanks for any suggestions. |

I use the maxell disc. It's worth every penny you pay for it. Using a compressed air can just scatters the dust and then when you put a disc in the player. When you put a disc in the player, the suction of the disc spinning will pull the dust right back in.

With a Blu-ray lens cleaner disc.
Don't ever do it manually! The BD lens is extremely fragile, as opposed to a CD and DVD laser lens. - I've talked to technicians in the past and they are the ones who told me so. And with a hard emphasis on that fact! ...No Q-Tip and alcohol isopropyl here! |
