Looked it up and the BD-p1000 is listed as 1080p capable.

I guess what you're saying was it de-interlaced 1080i and output the resulting 1080p but the fact is,.. There never was a 1080i only Blu Ray player.

Crap like that only happened on the poor mans HD format (HD DUD.)

This is incorrect, the Samsung BDP-1000 was the first Samsung BD Player, and it did 1080P.
ALL BD players have done 1080P from the start.

No, the Sammy took the 1080p data and converted it to 1080i and then deinterlaced it into 1080p, that was one of the biggest compliants about it and every review mentioned that issue.

Yep... and Blu-ray's early sub-par releases were blamed on the Samsung because of this.

You realize that is how all HD DVD players manage progressive output? They de-interlace internally.

Theoretically, it should be fine.

Not all, the AX2 and I think the A3 are true native 1080p.

Actually, the main reason (for complaints about the P1000) was a DNR mode was stuck on in the P1000.

There were also some shoddy early encodings by Sony.

AFAIK, the XA2 uses the Reon chip to de-interlace.

And you mean the A30/A35 right? The A3 is 1080i.

I was going to say the same thing. Not sure how that was meant to be a slam on the Samsung BD player, given ALL the Toshiba models that output 1080p do the same thing. Especially since it's well known that the A20 1080p model fails every deinterlacing test you throw at it.

Umm.. no. the A3 doesn't even output 1080p period... and the XA2 (which I assume is what you meant) deinterlaces from 1080i using a Reon chip... which is why it does it properly... unlike the A20.

Wasn't meant to be a slam, just a FYI fact. As to what players pass what, to be honest I don't keep up with that stuff. I get what is considered the best at that time and press on from there, unless I am looking to update I don't really keep up.

I think that the Samsung took the 1080p signal off the disc, interlaced it(1080i) and then deinterlaced for ouput (1080p). I think that this was confirmed by Kris Deering at hometheaterhifi.

It added an extra step that was uncessary and could introduce artifacts.

That is correct -- although it's not EXACTLY unnecessary. To get a 1080p60 output from a 1080p24 source, you have to do a 3:2 pulldown. Whether you do that to each frame or each field doesn't matter too much... so long as you have a GOOD deinterlacer to follow that up with (if you apply 3:2 per field, that is). I'm not sure how the quality was on the original Samsung -- possibly not great if there were artifacts created. The deinterlacing in the Toshiba XA2 is quite good... but quite terrible on the A20.

I think the Toshiba A30/35 are the only HD DVD players which read 1080p/24 properly off the disc with no additional processing. Maybe Kris Deering can verify.
