Is your receiver capable of decoding from HDMI? Does it have HDMI in AND out? If no to both questions then you need to put the HDMI out to the TV and just run an optical cable to the receiver. If no to the first and yes to the second you STILL need to run an optical cable to your receiver and HDMI to your tv. If yes to the first and no to the second you STILL need to hook it up with HDMI to tv and optical cable to your reciever. If yes to both then pretty simple, hook the PS3 to the receiver and then the receiver to your tv. I think that pretty much covers it.

My tv has two HDMI in's and my receiver has only one HDMI out and 0 in. And the out has a HD cable running to the one of the tv's two HDMI inputs.

Hate to break it to you, but what you have isn't a home theater receiver, if I'm assuming correctly that the DVD player is built into it. What you have is the current trend in "Home-Theater-in-a-box" packages, where you simply have a beefed up, upconverting DVD player that internally decodes DTS, Dolby Digital, etc, and to which you can plug in a 5.1 speaker set. The HDMI port is only for outputting the upconverted picture to your HDTV. You CANNOT hook up any external Home Theater component to your system.
A couple of my friends nearly fell into this trap when they went shopping for a Home Theater setup. Luckily, they asked me to come along, and I was able to steer them away from these "Sets". We looked around, and the traditional "Home-Theater-in-a-box" that consists of an actual Home Theater Reciever, and 5.1 speaker set are few and far between these days. We did find the Onkyo series HT750 at a Visions electronics, with the proper set up that they were looking for. A true home theater receiver doesn't have anything like a cd player, or dvd built into it. The only component built in is likely to be an AM/FM receiver. |
