Tony Hancock was one of the greatest comedians but he was also a neurotic perfectionist who alienated everyone who worked with him. His TV and radio work was superb and is still hilarious to this day but he was far from prolific at the cinema. Cameos in Those Magnificent Men and The Wrong Box and his 1963 film, the sporadically funny but bleak and sad, The Punch And Judy Man. The Rebel, written by Galton and Simpson and Hancock wasn't well received at the time but has since built a loyal following. Its a marvellous satire on artistic pretensions with some great dialogue.
Hancock "This is women how I see them" Mrs Crevatte "Oh you poor man" A blu would be very welcome as the DVD is awful, wrong ratio and worse picture quality than the VHS. TV stations have a nice quality widescreen print. Galton and Simpson's long presumed lost script for what would have been Hancock's second film The Day Off has recently been found and by all accounts would have made a great film |
