I thought this would be a good place for HDR only display reviews to see which ones will provide the best experience to the consumer for the new format. Putting it in the display category will separate these reviews by technology putting them in entirely different forums depending on the tech behind the display.
Some reviews on the Samsung KS 9500 (KS 9000 in Europe) The Samsung edge lit display which gets scary bright suffers low black levels of 0.16 when in HDR mode due to the horizontal lighting from the bottom of the panel. Both reviewers talk about the good and bad characteristics of this UHDTV. While UHD premium certified this panel suffers some issues concerning black levels, but peaks at over 1400 nits in a 2% window and goes over 500 nits full screen. http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/ue55k...1603244256.htm https://www.avforums.com/review/sams...v-review.12481 ttp://www.forbes.com/sites/johnarcher/2016/03/22/samsung-un55ks9500-4k-hdr-tv-review-blinded-by-the-light/#3db4f60f433d Forbes is tricky with links, copy and paste and ad an h in front of link. New US review that shows the flaws of the bottom lit display. Hint wait for the KS9800 FALD display. Reviews of the LG 65G6P OLED!
I added a new review of the g6 oled from reviewed. Still a lot of unanswered questions though. I don't believe DCI was fully measured and they are stating that with a 10% window in only reaches 290 nits. If true it shouldn't be UHD premium certified. http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/oled6...1604014268.htm http://televisions.reviewed.com/cont...oled-tv-review http://www.soundandvision.com/conten...w74r077lAve.97 Last edited by PRO-630HD; 06-20-2016 at 04:40 PM. |

David mentioned over at AVSforum that mine was one of the displays used in the review. He calibrated it before it was shipped from Value Electronics. He watched Avatar 3D on my display along with some UHD titles. They stated the calibration made the picture quality look incredible. |

Do you even know who David Mackenzie is? By your response I don't think you do.
He's known as the top OLED ISF Calibrator. He also calibrates the displays for Value Electronics Flat Panel Shoot Out every year. So yes I would trust his calibrations and his word concerning his calibration. You can see where he answered me back over at AVSforum on this. If you can't believe what he said concerning his calibration of my OLED then I take it you don't believe his review on the LG G6 either. |

I agree Bruce, the contrast ratio was much better at 5005:1 compared to 2843 : 1, actually big difference. Color gamut really is negligible and the new D model is significantly brighter though. At a color gamut of 88% DCI and a 10% window of 728cd/m2 I can see why Sony didn't bother with UHD Premium certification. Because it couldn't meet the requirements.

So far from the reviews we are getting it seems like UHD premium certified sets or sets that can meet those requirements that are FALD or OLED will really be the sets to get for best performance with UHD HDR. Some of these sets with 10 bit panels and HDR are only reaching 300cd/m2 brightness in a 10% window which really defeats the purpose. Like reaching 75% DCI P3 seems like a waste of money if you wish to invest in UHD bluray. The last thing I am going to add is also if possible getting a set with Dolby Vision. I actually think over time it could be a big deal and especially for future proofing. Kind of like making sure your receiver had DTS back in the DVD days. Lastly for me I am not giving up 3D folks!

Kinda surprised myself that these 2016 SOny's are actually worse in parts to the 2015 ones. DCIP3 seems to be better in 2015, while brightness is turned up only by 100 nits on 2016, but at a loss of a wider color gamut.
Looks like I'm good with my Sony X850C for a while, at least until I see those OLEDs that are truly delivering drop in price. That LG one reached 94% DCIP3 which is awesome. I do think it's odd that a lot of manufacturers besdies Sony don't fully support 24p. Looks like Samsung supports it on disc only, but 60p and 60i (streaming and cable) are prone to judder unless you enable soap opera effect. I stuck with Sony partly because they 100% support judder free 24p playback on ALL signals and ways to watch. Would like to see that form more manufacturers. |

Rtings.com also had the EF9500 at 81% DCI P3 where hdtvtest had it at 86% and avforums had it at 88%. The units I would think are going to have slight fluctuations between sets. Also on the Sony 930 1045nits compared to 978 for a 2% window and 875nits vs 728 for a 10% window between hdtvtest and rtings respectively.
