Fantastic news. Really like this film... crazy to think this sort of homemade no-budget stuff gets a 4K scan.

Only downside is, that it will probably be years before this gets released (Synapse do take their time... maybe a little too much so)

I don't remember the exact details from that old thread, but it was something about a proper restoration would require tons of work with the A and B rolls, and the way the original materials were edited together - like a checkerboard. Someone may have more accurate details on all that, but it just sounded like a very large undertaking to do it right. So, ya, 2021 may not be so far-fetched.

I never bought the current blu ray as I'd heard it was a terrible transfer so I kept my dvds.

I'd love to get a good quality of it. I love this movie. Mom and I would talk about it even decades later from when we saw it, she always knows what it is if I say "the movie where the slug thing falls in the old ladies blender" and she starts laughing.

But damn, synapse? I doubt I'll get to see it within the next 2 years.

As I was saying in the old thread, this is amazing news. I've always loved this film, and I was so disappointed at how the old blu-ray(s) turned out. I'm thrilled that Synapse got this one. They'll definitely treat this right. I can't believe it's getting a 4k remaster.

I think at some point I confusingly associated the previous Blu-ray's quality with the quality of the movie itself, it doesn't seem like this one is a stinker. Anyway, this should look marvelous restored in 4K by Synapse, the creature effects look really cool from a quick Google image search. It'll probably be quite a few years, but I'm in no rush, see you all then!

Yeah, I was following that thread and you're right, it was a train wreck.

Synapse will take their time with this as usual so I doubt we will be seeing this next year but when it gets released it's going to be something special for sure.

Synapse created a wetgate-printed 16mm IP from the original A/B roll negatives for their DVD release, so they could scan that instead of the A/B rolls.

Working on the 4K remaster of THE DEADLY SPAWN today.

We aren't using the 21st Century elements. We are using an element I created from the original A/B roll 16mm negative. We have access to the material we had access to last time. If Ted Bohus still has any additional footage laying around, he'd give it to us, but the film is almost 34 years old.
