Ju-On: The Grudge Box-set

For anyone who's a fan of the Ju-on franchise I can strongly recommend the recently released box-set containing the first two theatrical movies and the latest one. The quality is excellent on all 3 movies and it's nice to finally see them in HD =)

Yep that's the one. No english subs but DTS 5.1 on all of them and 1080p.

^The second one is awesome too. The 3rd is ok. But the 4th/final one is the sequel of the 3rd one.

The first two look really good, The Beginning of the End has that hideous video look so I noticed some macroblocking, but it's not a big deal...

What about the fourth one Juon The Final Curse? And you were able to watch them without subtitles? Unless you can speak Japanese

Got a copy of the four movie Blu-ray set from Japan. All four discs are region free. There are no subtitles in any language available on the disc. The listing of Japanese subtitles for each release was erroneous. The packaging is four amaray cases in a flimsy cardboard slipbox. There are extras present on the discs. Feel free to ask me any questions.

So far, I have only watched Ju-on: The Grudge parts one and two. I find it very troubling to report there appears to be video issues for both. There is a very heavy and disproportionate amount of what appears to be digital noise in the horizontal middle of each frame, practically one-third or more of every image for the entire duration of both movies in their 1.85:1 frames.

Imagine a 2:35:1 framed image and the viewing area is obscured by a blanket of heavy noise. This is about the size of the viewing area affected on the first two movies. There is a possibility it could have been a film stock issue or a telecine malfunction, but this is just a guess on my part.

I researched Ju-on: The Grudge part 1 on Vudu in standard definition (which appears to be a direct rip of the Lionsgate DVD) and found the abundance of noise was not present or readily obvious.

The video quality is better than DVD, but it is marred by the digital noise. You gain a decent amount of clarity that is then smothered by noise.

The audio quality is pretty good. You have the choice of either Japanese DTS-HD 5.1 or LCPM 2.0. Screams are really shrill and jarring. I only watched with the LCPM track and did not have a chance to try out the surround sound track.

I will update once I have watched the final two installments and mention any anomalies or highlights.

Couldn't you just rip the subs from the English DVD release and put them onto the blu ray file?

This actually got an English friendly release in Norway? I’m amazed. How come this didn’t make more waves.

Hoping Arrow or some other label gets it out in the UK and US this year.

Although potentially this might indicate someone else has the rights to an English subbed release, otherwise you’d think that release would have included English no?
