I know! Bloody Rhodesian Ridgebacks...
Anyway, spines are never going to align, but I love them not conforming, as it goes wonderfully with my not storing them alphabetically, and really pisses off the Missus when she's trying to work out presents! Last edited by WilsonBros; 01-03-2017 at 08:18 AM. |

no i like that one. I dislike the one whith all of the traditional mainstream films. Lots of rating symbols, different colors, different fonts. It looks cool on an individual level. But when you have lots of them it just looks cluttered.
Criterion generally have toned down spines, even though they dont have a standard font/look they still look nice. |

I think that's just the nature of the beast. Individual releases from different publishers all want to scream for your attention from the shelf at the store. Older releases tend to be placed spine-out on the shelf.
We agree that it's not great, but I don't know what to do about it. Your example for comparison isn't fair, I think, because they're all from Eureka! and they obviously have control over all their own releases. One thing I've done to limit the madness on my shelves is to convert everything to 11 or 12.5mm covers. If there's no specialised cover (like Eureka releases) and there's not too many discs, of course, like with TV series. |

Mr. Spines just heard about what happened to his brother Mr. Dark. Your childhood is over. AGAIN. As for the spines, I organise by genre, so the spines don't gang up one me... |

Anyway, the second pic does not show traditional mainstream films, but different cult movie labels like 88 films, Code Red, Shout factory,... Some have more uniform spines, others don't. So your two chosen pics do not really show your point. 😃 |

I just hate the Artificial Eye spines that have the text printed in the opposite direction of every other disc on my shelf. I suppose I could put the things on my shelf upside down so they would look right, but I would know the disc was actually upside down and it would bother me.

Eh, it's a mixed emotion for me. I have a very strong fondness for minimalist design, so those European Criterion cases looks absolutely amazing to me, but at the same time I feel like it would be kind of difficult to distinguish films at a quick glance if I was just scanning over my library to pick out something to watch. I don't dislike the so-called "gaudy" spines either. It helps me pick out a film I might be watching for and helps each individual film pop out from the masses so I don't just subconsciously sweep past a movie that might have been just what I was in the mood for because it happens to look almost exactly like the three to either side of it.
In the long run I think I'd prefer the design aesthetic of the minimal cases if it was a situation of being able to simply buy one or the other as you like, but since that isn't the case, I'm more than happy to have my splash of rainbow carnage across the bookshelf to make the collection look a bit livelier. |
