Default Theaters to go extinct?

Sup,

I just got back from seeing The Bourne Ultimatum at a movie theater. I really enjoyed the movie, but I couldn't help thinking to myself the whole time how much better it would look on blu-ray. It seems we have reached the point where home technology surpassed theater technology. Now I do realize many people go to movies for social reasons, and that may may keep them alive. However, you have to think that as more and more people get hdtv's and blu-ray players, that movie theaters are going to do worse and worse business until they are few and far between.

Maybe I'm just a kook or conspiracy nut, i don't know, anyone have a thought on the subject?

cheers,

bryan

Was it a DLP theatre, or was it just a normal theatre?

Big problem I see with alot of theatres now is the whole focus difficulty really hurting the enjoyment.

The theatre release produces alot of funds, and popularity buzz for the home videos. Sure, it can be worked around, but that would really raise the cost for home videos significantly.

umm...i totally agree with you that the whole theater experience is lackluster now that i've experienced blu-ray. BUT i for one will continue to go purely for the atmosphere and the deep rooted nostalgia factor (as a kid, the movie theater was a place of epical magic) nothing beats the smell of popcorn, the dimming lights and experiencing a movie for the first time with other people...especially seeing blockbusters on opening nights. case in point: star wars. though disappointed by their latest films and though there isn't a sci-fi geek anywhere in me, i enjoyed being in the theater with the star wars kids who were in full costume staging light saber fights...oh and bringing out the beach balls. good times. the movie theater is a communal experience. if it faded, that would sadden me. we are becoming less connected as a society due to this high technology jump (cell phones, internet, etc. have all but removed ourselves from interpersonal interaction). i hope the theater stays...

I'm gonna guess he saw it in a standard theater. Those DLPs are amazing!

I like to see good new movies on the big screen so I know if I should buy the BD later.

We have a theater called Alamo Draft House where they serve you food and beer during the movie. Plus they only allow kids with parents and at certain times. It makes the movies fun again!

Box offices break records every year, it's just to bad the smaller theaters are going out of business, they were the best ones. It seems like all the theaters around me are 22+ screens, no 2nd run houses anymore.

the only reason i dont go to the movies often is the price is so high! lol i mean yes bluray is high right now but im sure after awhile it will match dvd prices. So i look at it as hey go see it now for 8.75 plus drinks or popcorn another 8 bucks or wait until its out and buy it for 13.99 lol and if u dont like it sell it on ebay and get ur money back

just wait untill more and more movies are done in 3D. James Camron's AVATAR, next year and one coming out this year called BEOUWOLF(sp?). 3D WILL be the next big thing for theaters and keep you coming back for more.

I saw transformers and spider-man 3 in a DLP theatre and it was amazing! It was like watching Blu-Ray in a movie theatre. If all movies were like that now I wouldn't mind paying 10 bucks to see movies. But I recently went and saw sunshine and the film was so dirty that it really took away from the visuals. The movie was still great though...can't wait for it to come out on Blu.

I expect 3D to help them. James Cameron has one coming May of 2009 and by then I think there will be quite a few 3D theaters around. Just having the theaters know that there are 2 coming that month should get some of them to get ready for them (and I'm sure there will be more 3D presentations before then).

I like the privacy of a home theatre, the ability to see the film whenever you want, to pause and roll back, etc. And to not have people sneezing on the back of your neck. Yes, you can have beer and pizza, too.

I think blu-ray and HD will hurt some public theatres.

Umm.. theaters make WAY to much money to go "extinct".

Plus.. all those HUGE screens, the 3d, the iMAX, the popcorn/snacks, the adds, the trailers....

too much going on. there is no way they would disappear anytime soon.

Smile I got burned out on theaters after getting Blu-ray . . .

. . . but then my local theatre (Carmike) went DLP and now it is a worthwhile experience again.

Also, I have to say that the films shown in IMAX are very impressive. I saw 300 in IMAX back in March.

There is still the drawback of
  • Sticky floors (yuck!)
  • Can't pause the movie for restroom breaks
  • Overpriced concessions
  • Rude patrons who make and receive cellphone calls during the movie!

Well a 1080 x 2048 DLP in a theater isn't much different than a 1080 x 1920 DLP in a home.

maybe in the future they'll think about putting in high-def players into theatres to keep them alive.

Im down to about 2 movies a year and it might go lowr then that. Transformers had such a crappy PQ it killed me. I also saw knocked up this year (the only 2 movies i saw) and it was blurry and really off. I could care less if they went away in 10 years. $10 to see a picture. Im ok, no really thanks but no thanks.
