Mike Flanagan, director of 'Oculus', 'Hush', and 'Quija: Origin of Evil', recently completed filming his latest project, an adaptation of Stephen King's 1992 novel "Gerald's Game". Like 'Hush', it looks like it's going to be a Netflix exclusive here. Stephen King saw a rough cut of it, and seemed to be very impressed by it.

Filming on Gerald's Game, Netflix's adaptation of Stephen King’s 1992 suspense novel of the same name, commenced in October and is already in post-production. And even though we don't know when we'll get our first look at it, King was provided with a rough cut and has posted a very positive review of it.

"Saw a rough cut of Mike Flanagan's GERALD'S GAME yesterday," he tweeted on Friday. "Horrifying, hypnotic, terrific. It's gonna freak you out."

Additionally, a week ago, director Mike Flanagan talked-up the project, making sure to praise his two stars. “We’re in post right now, and I’m so, so excited about this one,” he told Dread Central. “Carla and Bruce [Greenwood] were both amazing – it really is some of the best work I’ve ever seen from either of them. This has been a dream project for a long time, and I’m thrilled to report that it exceeded even my expectations. I can’t wait for it to get out into the world.”

At the end of January, Gugino talked about what made the project so challenging. “It was one of the hardest, most challenging shoots I've ever done, which is saying a lot,” she shared with Den of Geek. “It's one of the most fulfilling things I've done. I love this woman…you're dealing with something that has elements of horror, but also is really more of a thriller, in the vain of a Misery. And she is also dealing with this childhood sexual trauma with her father, and those are all tricky tones to find together.”

Gerald’s Game follows Gerald and Jessie Burlingame, who have gone to their summer home on a warm weekday in October for a romantic interlude. After being handcuffed to her bedposts, Jessie tires of her husband's games, until things take an unexpectedly tragic turn. Still handcuffed, she is trapped and alone. Painful memories from her childhood bedevil her. Her only company is a hungry stray dog and the voices that populate her mind. As night comes, she is unsure whether it is her imagination or if she has another companion: someone watching her from the corner of her dark bedroom.

The cast features Carla Gugino (Watchmen) and Bruce Greenwood (Star Trek into Darkness) as Jessie and Gerald Burlingame. It also includes Henry Thomas (Gangs of New York), Carel Struycken (Men in Black), Kate Siegel (Ouija: Origin of Evil), and Chiara Aurelia (Agent Carter).

It was directed by Mike Flanagan, who helmed Relativity Media's Oculus (2013) and the Netflix's Hush (2016). Flanagan also co-wrote the script with his Oculus and Before I Wake collaborator Jeff Howard.

Great book, but hopefully they chop off the end bit. Even by King's standards, that ending was awful.

Anyways, BIG fan of Flanagan, so I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for its Netflix debut.

I remember reading the book, when

[Show spoiler]she is driving away and there were still pages left and I was like "why? it's over, and this actually ended quiet well by King's standards." As I kept reading that end sequence, I was actually wide-eyed with shock at what amounts to a "Dumbledore explains it all segment," it was literally the worst, most tacked-on ending of all time, except arguably the Harry Potter epilogue. As the reveals were made about who the ghost was, my sense of horror at the novel being ruined was far greater than anything else in the novel including the incestuous molestation, and in fact it was more horrible than anything else the King has come up with on purpose.

Sounds good, I haven't read the book yet but to hear that Flanagan directed is good news, as I really enjoyed Oculus.

I was hoping for Frank Darabont, but I was a fan of Flanagan's Before I Wake (Haven't seen any of his other films) so I'm intrigued.

Yeah, those are the "typical Stephen King endings," which tend to be bad (you can add Under the Dome as a recent example of the same thing), but bad within the realm of fairness. i.e., "you suck at endings, you blow everyone up, fair enough," and move on. It's only when you read stuff like Rose Madder and Gerald's Game that the endings move in the territory of aggressively bad imo, i.e., it actually took effort to make the end as bad as it was.

I'm neutral on it, I think a lot of the last book was just asinine, however (the three Stephen King clones? whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?). It's going to play into the movie, so the whole thing may be solid.

Haven't watched the trailer but I saw a photo and the dude that plays Gerald looks too good looking/has too good a body for the character [if the guy in the photo was in fact Gerald]

I don't mind King's endings because the journey to get there is usually so good. I quite liked the ending to Revival, definitely one of his better new novels IMO

No offense, but this looks like the book with its balls cut off. Isn't she supposed to be nude, and a heart attack? Ugh.
