Director & Screenwriter: Taylor Sheridan (Sicario, Hell or High Water) Actors: Elizabeth Olsen, Jeremy Renner, Jon Bernthal, Martin Sensmeier, Kelsey Asbille The first reviews from Sundance unfortunately aren't as good as those from Sheridans first two movies Sicario and Hell or High Water. - Sundance Review (Variety.com) |

Eh, sounds pretty interesting to me as well. Of course the synopsis could have read, "An FBI agent teams with the town's veteran game tracker to investigate several species of daffodils on a Native American reservation" and it still would have sounded interesting to me

I hated both Sicario and Hell or High Water, so needless to say, I think I'm not a big fan of Sheridan's writing.
I also really dislike Renner. But I'll still likely see this film, with very limited expectations, in order to have an informed opinion. |

![]() Anyhow, I'm totally in for this. Sheridan has the goods, and I like both Renner and Elizabeth Olsen. Actually, Olsen's just spectacular. I'm really looking forward to this. |

Sicario was basically an ultra-violent episode of The Bridge (which handled the US/Mexico border premise two years earlier and a lot better) with an unbelievable Emily Blunt while Hell or High Water's main flaw is Jeff Bridges' character (he's a racist and unlikable character that we are supposed to sympathize with but it just does not work).
And I figured this film wasn't very good after Weinstein dropped it. |

I've seen episodes of say "Criminal Minds" with much more disturbing content as far as violence goes. |

But maybe I just don't like Villeneuve's American films. I feel the things that made him an exceptional director in Quebec are lost in translation and that in crossing the cultural barrier from French Canadian cinema to the States, he tries to overcompensate by doing too much at once (and maybe the extreme and unnecessary violence of Prisoners just carries over into his other American films for me).
Personally, I think his masterpiece is Polytechnique, which though being a violent film is a short one (running only half as long as Prisoners) and shows what happened on that day in 1989 without pandering or going for awards. It may seem like a simple film but it's powerful. Too bad so few people have seen it. |

I've seen all his films from that one onward now. I will grant you that Prisoners is pretty intense. I watched the trailer the other day, and it was very unsettling. And this is a film I've seen twice already, and even the trailer is unsettling still. But now that I've finally seen Incendies, I can say that I have never seen a film of his that I didn't think was at least "very good." I wish I could find a version of Polytechnique that had English-friendly extras. Because they look great, but I don't know French. Well, other than how to say, "Excuse me, but I don't speak French," in French. ![]() Someday I'd like to see his first two features, Maelstrom and August 32nd on Earth, but I think the chances of me ever finding a way of seeing those is slim, at best. |
