Default Wind River (2017)

Wind River (USA 2017)

Quote:
An FBI agent teams with the town's veteran game tracker to investigate a murder that occurred on a Native American reservation.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5362988

Director & Screenwriter: Taylor Sheridan (Sicario, Hell or High Water)

Actors: Elizabeth Olsen, Jeremy Renner, Jon Bernthal, Martin Sensmeier, Kelsey Asbille

The first reviews from Sundance unfortunately aren't as good as those from Sheridans first two movies Sicario and Hell or High Water.

Eh, sounds pretty interesting to me as well. Of course the synopsis could have read, "An FBI agent teams with the town's veteran game tracker to investigate several species of daffodils on a Native American reservation" and it still would have sounded interesting to me

I hated both Sicario and Hell or High Water, so needless to say, I think I'm not a big fan of Sheridan's writing.

I also really dislike Renner.

But I'll still likely see this film, with very limited expectations, in order to have an informed opinion.

How someone could hate Sicario is beyond me.

Anyhow, I'm totally in for this. Sheridan has the goods, and I like both Renner and Elizabeth Olsen. Actually, Olsen's just spectacular. I'm really looking forward to this.

Had a feeling this wouldn't get great reviews. Established writers tend to struggle transitioning to fully fledged filmmakers for some reason. I hope the critics are wrong on this one.

Sicario was basically an ultra-violent episode of The Bridge (which handled the US/Mexico border premise two years earlier and a lot better) with an unbelievable Emily Blunt while Hell or High Water's main flaw is Jeff Bridges' character (he's a racist and unlikable character that we are supposed to sympathize with but it just does not work).

And I figured this film wasn't very good after Weinstein dropped it.

Hmm, I never saw "The Bridge" so can't comment on it, as compared to Sicario. But I really don't consider Sicario an ultra-violent film. Sure, there's a lot of blood in a few scenes and a lot of people get shot. But most of worst killings are implied, talked about, or we only see the results.

I've seen episodes of say "Criminal Minds" with much more disturbing content as far as violence goes.

But maybe I just don't like Villeneuve's American films. I feel the things that made him an exceptional director in Quebec are lost in translation and that in crossing the cultural barrier from French Canadian cinema to the States, he tries to overcompensate by doing too much at once (and maybe the extreme and unnecessary violence of Prisoners just carries over into his other American films for me).

Personally, I think his masterpiece is Polytechnique, which though being a violent film is a short one (running only half as long as Prisoners) and shows what happened on that day in 1989 without pandering or going for awards. It may seem like a simple film but it's powerful. Too bad so few people have seen it.

I will absolutely agree with you that Polytechnique is one hell of a movie. It's incredibly powerful and as you say doesn't pander or anything like that. It's brilliant and very depressing.

I've seen all his films from that one onward now. I will grant you that Prisoners is pretty intense. I watched the trailer the other day, and it was very unsettling. And this is a film I've seen twice already, and even the trailer is unsettling still.

But now that I've finally seen Incendies, I can say that I have never seen a film of his that I didn't think was at least "very good." I wish I could find a version of Polytechnique that had English-friendly extras. Because they look great, but I don't know French. Well, other than how to say, "Excuse me, but I don't speak French," in French.

Someday I'd like to see his first two features, Maelstrom and August 32nd on Earth, but I think the chances of me ever finding a way of seeing those is slim, at best.

I think there is an English-friendly DVD of Maelstrom but it's long out-of-print. It may be on one of the streaming services.

That trailer just reminds me how much I hate Jeremy Renner's face. I just want to punch it.

The fact that she didn't get an Oscar nomination for Martha Marcy May Marlene is a freakin' crime against humanity.
