For those who are not familiar with the other two-reel comedies that Columbia produced from 1934-1957, these have sadly fallen into the depths of obscurity. Sony only put out bits and pieces of the output on DVD since 2006. It's about time Sony puts these out on Blu-Ray, so people can enjoy these rare titles.
This is an example of the few non-Stooges two-reelers that got put out on DVD over the years: Midnight Blunders (1936 short with Monte Collins and Tom Kennedy that was included as an extra on a Sam Katzman box set issued by Sony.) Charley Chase (All 20 of his Columbia shorts were issued by Sony as two volumes on MOD DVD. Volume 2 also featured the Columbia two-reeler A Nag in the Bag starring the team of Joe Smith and Charlie Dale and was directed by Chase.) The Buster Keaton Collection (The complete series of 10 shorts Keaton made at Columbia from 1939-41) Pleased to Mitt You (A 1940 short featuring the Glove Slingers and Shemp Howard in a supporting role. This was featured as an extra on the DVD of Golden Boy. Phoney Cronies (A 1942 short starring El Brendel, Tom Kennedy, and Dudley Dickerson. This was actually on a Three Stooges DVD compilation put out by Legend Films in 2008. The source they used was an Official Films home movie print with different beginning/end titles, but the print was still uncut. Ain't Love Cuckoo? (A 1946 short starring Gus Schilling and Richard Lane (who was better known as Inspector Farraday in the Boston Blackie films. This was on the first volume as an extra on Sony's Icons of Screwball Comedy box set. Finally, in 2012, Sony put out the (almost) entire output of the Shemp Howard, Joe Besser and Joe DeRita solo output. The only ones weren't included were 1938's Not Guilty Enough starring Andy Clyde and featured Shemp in a supporting role and 1938's Cuckoorancho, a musical comedy two-reeler starring Besser and was produced in New York, due to the fact Sony wasn't able to find proper materials. |
