Blue Underground's Bill Lustig confirmed that this is in the works in the September issue of Media Play News.

I don’t seem to be able to copy/paste this text from my phone, but...!

Yup, you love to see that and you also love to see Lustig's comment that the MANIAC and ZOMBIE 4K discs sold "well above expectations." Good news all the way around.

I would assume the great Frank Frazetta documentary that's on the DVD edition, won't be on this edition either, since it didn't get ported over to the bluray edition. The commentary with Bakshi is fascinating to listen to in not only the movie backstory and all, but that the moderator at one point pisses him off.

I'd be very curious to see how the 4K transfer improves the picture, since there is a ton of inherent haze and what appears to be film nicks on the negative.

At first I was hoping this was the Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams Netflix flick.

Oh well, I still chuckled just thinking about it.

I contacted Blue Underground a while back and was told that the transfer used for all releases by the company so far has been an HD transfer from 2005. It looks good, but I wonder how it will look with more modern scanning technology. Considering this is a pre digital hand drawn animated film, there is one thing that will be hard to fix: cel dust. Unless it’s Disney, it would be too expensive for a independent company to remove them without compromising the artwork.

I mean, they'd just individually paint out the worst bits frame by frame. We definitely don't want the Disney touch! lmao

The Criterion release of Watership Down had a decent amount of dust on cels during the title screens, etc. After a time you get used to it.

I'd rather put up with a bit of dust and nicks than have a Disney style wipe job, although if it is within their financial means to remove damage and debris it would be nice.

while I agree a 'Disney wipe job' is not ideal, the image comparison between the DVD and bluray was very apparent in how in hidef the slight imperfections really jumped out. Will be very curious to see how a 4K transfer will compare to the bluray.

I’d like to see the Original Dolby Stereo soundtrack included, Seeing as there was no option on the Blu-Ray. The 7.1 track sounded great and sounds accurate, but having the option to hear the original track would be nice. I wonder what Dolby Atmos would add to the experience.

don't go there ...

knowing Blue Underground they might take a stab at it, Zombie's Atmos mix is surprising, but I like having the option to hear original and remixes.

With that said, what are your thoughts on the existing 7.1 soundtrack on the Blu-ray?

honestly I hadn't my 7.1 system up and running when I bought the bluray - hmm, guess I should rectify that.

I honestly thought we'd get Heavy Metal or Titan A.E. before this, but I'm not complaining.

the fact that Titan isn't even on bluray is maddening.

Heavy Metal I suspect will get a release from Sony, getting a Dolby Atmos remix from the 8-channel SDDS mix - which should sound great.

It would add to disc space where image could fit

It’s an hour and 20 minute movie, I think they can put in more extras and audio options if they wanted too.

Considering this movie was animated in 1.33:1 but matted for 1.85:1 for theatrical release and 1.78:1 on the previous Blu-Ray, I think it would be a nice bonus to see the full frame if it was an option.
