Default The Promise (Christian Bale, Oscar Isaac, Jean Reno, and James Cromwell)

Quote:
Christian Bale and Oscar Isaac will star in “The Promise,” an epic love story that Oscar-winning filmmaker Terry George (“Hotel Rwanda”) will direct from a script he co-wrote with Robin Swicord (“Memoirs of a Geisha”), TheWrap has learned.

Mike Medavoy (“Black Swan”) is producing “The Promise” with Eric Esrailian, Ralph Winter (“X-Men”) and William Horberg (Milk”). Production is slated to start this fall in Southern Europe, including Portugal and the Canary Islands.
Set during the last days of the Ottoman Empire, “The Promise” follows a love triangle between Michael, a brilliant medical student, the beautiful and sophisticated Ana, and Chris — a renowned American journalist based in Paris.

Bale will play Chris, an AP reporter in love with both a woman and the danger of being in a combat zone amidst a world that is falling apart.
Isaac will play Michael, a medical student in love with the same woman but conflicted by old-world traditions and his heart.
The Ottoman Empire was dissolved in 1922 following the Armenian Genocide of 1915, which resulted in an estimated death toll of between 800,000 and 1.5 million people. The subject has been near and dear to George, who in March 2013, was a guest of the Armenian State Pedagogical University, where the Irish filmmaker compared the Armenian genocide to the Rwanda genocide that he chronicled in “Hotel Rwanda.”
Sounds like this could be very promising.

Crazy that $100 million was spent on this movie. No way this turns a profit.

That being said, since I like the cast enough I'll still see it anyway. I'll probably be the only one at my theater for it.

I've only seen ads for this during Hap and Leonard on Sundance. Of course, I fast forward through the ads.

Anyway, I'm only seeing this for Charlotte Le Bon (how has she not been the lead in a film yet?) and Samantha from The Good Guys. Otherwise, I'm not expecting much (early word has been negative and it pissed off the Turks).

Thumbs up

Just saw this... AMAZING and powerful.

8.5/10

A tremendously powerful and utterly tragic depiction of the disheartening true life events surrounding the staggering attempt to exterminate Armenian Christians before and during WWI. Profound sadness and disbelief linger throughout the film because of the cruel and evil practices on display. Regretfully, until this movie I really had no idea these events even occurred. One and a half million Armenians wiped out. Cultist muslim butchery and evil should be combated and moved to be exposed in any era. This film takes on that responsibility in a truly heartfelt and moving manner. Nothing is easy to watch as waves of tragedy assaults the senses. Hope is conveyed but when certain characters meet their demise it truly delivers shock, dismay and disgust.

The film makers and remarkable cast deliver revolt and true emotion and do a remarkable job of telling this sad yet heroic struggle.

Uh, because she doesn't have what it takes to be a lead?

This is actually a pretty good war/romance during socio-political upheaval movie, great cast so strong performances (especially from Isaac), but it is very derivative, nothing new to bring to the table just a solid classical kinda war romance drama.
