Premiering at Sundance 2025: Sophie Brooks' Oh, Hi!

Iris and Isaac’s first romantic weekend getaway goes awry.

This romantic comedy of miscommunication and mismatched expectations basks in the magnetically charged opposites-attract chemistry between Iris (Molly Gordon) and Isaac (Logan Lerman). When their relationship swiftly unravels, Iris’ desperate hope that her beau’s reluctance to commit is merely curable confusion leads her to take increasingly unhinged actions to solidify her hold on Isaac’s heart. Writer-director Sophie Brooks maintains a sense of cheeky, off-kilter whimsy and twisted humor as the couple’s complete inability to read one another leads to an escalating series of potentially perilous misunderstandings.

Oh, Hi! draws us into the pair’s smitten rendezvous at a gorgeous rustic farmhouse amid a picturesque, bucolic landscape, cleverly setting an alluring and refreshing romantic scene before abruptly upending it and sending Iris, Isaac, and the audience hurdling into the emotional chaos that ensues.

Don’t Let Anything Spoil Sundance’s Funniest Rom-Com — Even This Interview

Filmmaker Sophie Brooks can’t wait for audiences to see her second film, the darkly funny and very wise “Oh, Hi!” this week at Sundance. When the film, starring Molly Gordon and Logan Lerman, unspools this weekend in Park City, it’s coming to the festival nearly fresh out of the box, all the better to conceal the delightful twist and turns at its heart. Please, don’t let anything spoil it. (Don’t worry: This chat is spoiler-free.)

“What’s crazy is, we finished the movie yesterday. We finished the mix, literally last night at 7:45 PM,” Brooks said when she spoke to IndieWire last Wednesday afternoon. “Even this morning I woke up and I was like, ‘Oh, oh, I don’t have to go to work today.’ It’s been this wild process where we submitted [to Sundance] on a rough cut, got in, which was incredibly exciting. Then it was like, ‘But, you have to finish the movie.’”

It’s been a long time coming. Brooks’ first film, the romantic comedy “The Boy Downstairs,” starred Zosia Mamet as a New Yorker shocked to discover her ex-boyfriend lives below her brand-new apartment. Horrifying, right? It’s all the worse, because Mamet’s Diana might also not be entirely over the dude, and close proximity is the last thing she needs. It came out in 2017, announcing Brooks as a whipsmart rom-com voice to watch. She’s been eager to make another once since.

“[That film was] so instructive, but it’s hard for me to differentiate how much of [my learning] was just growing up. I made my first feature when I was 26 and I’m 35 now,” Brooks said. “It took me nine years to get my second feature made, and I was working as a writer that whole time, and I was attached to projects as directors and I was in development, but it was really hard to get my second feature made. There were moments where I was like, ‘Oh my God, when is this going to happen?’”

Brooks readily admits her first feature came together very easily — “I just was like, ‘You write a script and then the first actress you send it to says yes, and then you get financing and then you make it!,’” she said with a laugh — and the interim between “The Boy Downstairs” and “Oh, Hi!” now feels a bit more reflective of the challenging work of getting an indie movie made. But that interim? Maybe it helped.

“My writing has [been] refined in a really deep way over the last nine years, life experience taught me a lot about the stories I wanted to tell,” she said. “I think I’m a braver writer now than I was in my twenties. I’ve experienced a lot more of life, the joys of it and the heartbreak of it.”

The idea — as much of as it we can reveal! — was born of a different kind of challenge. It started in March 2020, when Brooks (who lives in New York), just so happened to be a home with her parents in Los Angeles. You can guess where this is going. “I had a carry-on bag with me and ended up staying at my parents’ house where I grew up for eight months in 2020,” Brooks said.

Logan Lerman on being tied up for most of Oh, Hi!: 'I was limited in my physical options'

Actors can tie themselves in knots trying to figure out a role, but for Logan Lerman that became quite literal while making Oh, Hi!.

The film stars Lerman as Isaac, a seemingly perfect boyfriend who finds himself handcuffed to a bed in a vacation house for over 12 hours when his first weekend away with Iris (Molly Gordon) goes wildly off the rails. "It was challenging for me," the actor said following the film's premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. "I was limited in my physical options, and that became a fun challenge for me. I just enjoyed it. It was a great experience all around."

Lerman often takes on dramatic roles, such as his breakout star turn in The Perks of Being a Wallflower and his recent role in the TV miniseries, We Were the Lucky Ones. Given that, he found being tied to a bed for most of a movie a hilarious change of pace.

"This was just such a wonderful time for me," he gushed. "I'm used to doing some pretty heavy s--- and to go to work and just have fun and goof around with these great actors was so much fun."

I saw this earlier this evening at a mystery screening. Hadn't heard of it before and it opened without an introduction, so it was an entirely blind viewing for me.

It has a good mix of drama, comedy, and suspense. I've missed seeing Logan Lerman on screen for sure. I think the first act was the most engaging, but that's just because the story got to keep evolving. Once it hits its standstill, it stays there for a while, but isn't still without its charm (and where most of the comedy comes from, and in fact I would just mostly call this film a dark comedy at that).

This is my first exposure to Molly Gordon, who was asked to do a lot with a little, and she did great. This movie works best when it's just Gordon and Lerman on screen. The tough beats for me were trying to figure out whose lens we were seeing the movie through since it shifted often, as well as deciding a most favorable outcome for these two. Also, after that first act I was really wondering where they wanted to take things because this build-up could've led many different directions.

Overall, I think this movie worked in several ways, probably more so as a blind viewing.
