Default How well are movie theaters doing in 2017?

This is something of a off question I've been bugged about recently as I had the notice about 2 weeks ago that my local budget theater was to be closed permanently and just out of curiosity I thought I'd go do a bit of a google search for something related.

When I typed in for theater closings, just in the span of 2015-2016 alone, I've already got a solid 7 pages of reports on many locations being shut down and they're all different listings from each other. Out of further concern, one of my listings cropped up something about the Mall of America in Minnesota and they're replacing it with something meant for a more social experience, including space for VR interaction.

I'm actually somewhat alarmed by this. Knowing that I've always enjoyed being in front of the big screen since I was a kid, I never thought I'd see the day where I'd be getting indications that look like the cinema is in big trouble and may in fact be already well into it's downfall. Is anyone willing to give me some thoughts on this and do you know how much of an effect this will have on us personally?
