Nice that this is still coming out on disc, although it still sucks that it's not getting a theatrical release.

Disney is giving it an extremely limited theatrical release next week. There will be an exact theater count early next week, but don't expect it to be wide.

I thought this was the only Pixar film not to be coming to physical media.

Soul and Luca came out on Blu & 4K despite getting moved over to D+ so likely the case with this one too. The only way we'll never get a Pixar film on physical is if they make it for Disney+ first and not theatrical

I searched up a number of major U.S. cities on Fandango and only found 3 theaters in the entire country showing Turning Red: one one in NYC, one in LA, and one in SF. Hopefully this number will increase in the coming days.

I’ll be seeing it in theaters on opening night in NY.

Can you list the trailers that played before the NYC engagement when you go?

Watched it tonight while half asleep haha. I can’t give my complete thoughts (need to watch it again when I can stay awake), but my daughter and wife loved it! I did enjoy what I was awake for!

I'm guessing that 50 minute documentary on D+ won't be included.

Watched this tonight and I thought it looked great. Really nice color palette. But it will also be the first Pixar animated movie I won't be buying. I've been a fan of their recent output but my wife, my son and myself all really disliked this one.

Watched it on D+ on Apple TV 4K 2021.

[Show spoiler]Does the animation look low budget compared to other Pixar titles to anyone else?

I'd have to say this is one of Pixar's lesser efforts. It just seemed like they weren't sure what to do at times and ripped off parts from other popular animated movies before veering back to Pixar quality story telling and that made it feel tonally uneven; which is unusual for Pixar.

[Show spoiler]A lot of that IMO was due to the puberty aspect of the storyline. You could tell Pixar was pushing its (and Disney's) boundaries when it came to telling that part of the story, but at the same time felt like they either didn't know how to do it properly or someone forced them to downplay certain aspects of it causing the better Pixar storytelling to be sacrificed as a result.

I enjoyed it. Definitely not top-tier Pixar, but it's an enjoyable movie, with some nice 90's / early 2000's nostalgia. Hits on the pressures kids feel growing up, especially in an Asian family. Some nice touches in this movie, including the use of traditional Chinese paintings to show the origins of the Red Panda backstory. This is the first feature film from Domee Shi (who wrote/directed the excellent short Bao), and it's partially influenced by her own childhood growing up in a Chinese family in Toronto.

Here's what she said:

Quote:
The inspiration behind Turning Red came from my own life growing up in the early aughts. I was this Chinese-Canadian, dorky, sassy, nerdy girl who thought she had everything under control, she was her mom’s good little girl and then boom puberty hit. Then I was bigger, I was hairier, I was hungry all the time. I was a hormonal mess and I was fighting with my like every other day. Making this film was my chance to go back to that time and with Julia, we talk about that time for both of us to understand and excavate what was happening back there.

Minions: Rise of Gru, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, DC League of Superpets, Lightyear. I think there were one or two others but I don’t remember what.

Most likely no. Lately Disney titles have had a weird release schedule for home entertainment. Physical media pre-orders have gone up exactly one month before the release date, and the digital copies don’t have any pre-orders. I don’t know why it’s been this way but this is how Disney has handled traditional home entertainment for every post-Onward release from all of their studios.

Edit: obviously, we don’t know a release date yet (unless I’ve missed something), but it’s unlikely to be next month (too soon). Luca was 2 months and Soul was 3 months between Disney+ and Blu-ray/Digital.

Well at least it's getting a physical release. Hoping the Steelbook looks fantastic. Movie was fun to watch.

Not to me. While the animation style isn't exactly my preference in 3D, It worked well for the movie, it looks incredibly distinctive from Pixar's other movies and it sure as hell doesn't look cheap. Just because the animation looks simplistic doesn't mean it's of worse quality by any measure.
