Blu-ray Knight

I was watching a movie in 2:40 aspect ratio, I had my tv set to normal the black bars appeared bigger, but when I switch my tv to widescreen mode the black bars opened up a bit more, so have I been watching my tv in the wrong mode the whole time? Should I just leave it in the normal setting or watch it in widescreen mode from now on or does switching it from normal to widescreen mode crop the picture somehow?
