"Though still a small part of the market, 4K/Ultra HD Blu-ray players are outpacing unit sales of original Blu-ray players in the same time frame, with 300,000 units sold in 2016 according to the Blu-ray Disc Association." Read more at https://www.soundandvision.com/conte...M6E4CBp3j8J.99 |

2.8 Million Blu-ray player's where sold-thorough black Friday 2007. This figure includes PlayStation 3, but if you extrapolate the numbers that would put standalone numbers between 600,000 to 700,000 units. |

relative to how many choices to buy, I feel like their are so few "players" out right now.

^ Well its a given fact that UDTV's have had some time to prepare to work with UHD players, so when UHD players arrived naturally the adoption rate is higher then comparing this to years ago when we transitioned to BD players when we still had 720P/1080i CRT's, Rear Projectors, projectors and so on. In other words technology is more aligned for a general replacement of BD player marketplace with UHD BD players, so of course adoption would be faster.
Doesn't take a market analysis to know this. ![]() |

A lot of that has to do with UHD players actually are cutting edge technology. There doesn't have to be as many models out there as were in the recent years of cheap BD players. In fact Sony is a great example of how they treated the BD player as a commodity, with ES level players eventually being removed and replaced with multiple cheap BD players. They have now swung back to you can't sell players too cheap and support R&D with the x800 and x1000.

you also have to wonder how many people already own blu-ray players that aren't in the market to buy anything new and those that are in the market to get something newer than blu-ray then a 4k uhd player is the only option, so maybe that's why they outsold blu-ray players last year
