All this talk about Mini SNES, Mini N64, do you think SEGA or a licensed developer could start working on their own version of the SMS? Back in the day when most people had Nintendo's, we actually had a SEGA Master System, which by far I think was better graphics wise than the NES.
I know SEGA is hanging by a thread these days, and I am still shocked that Nintendo let them put stuff on their platforms. They were big rivals in the 80's and 90's and once SEGA decided to call it quits after the end of the Dreamcast, you would think that Nintendo, Microsoft and Playstation could have denied putting any of their games on their hardware. I assumed back then that there was some sort of agreement behind closed doors that SEGA can continue making games and put them on Nintendo's hardware as long as SEGA does not produce any new hardware that competes with the other systems. But honestly do you think there is a market for a Mini-SMS? |

The success of the Mini-NES should prompt the rise of other Mini Systems. I am just curious if it does go that far, what will happen when they reach the Optical disc era (PS1, Saturn, DC, PS2, Original XB, Game Cube)? I guess the the companies will have to decide when it comes to keeping costs downs which will be cheaper and faster for them to produce. A special optical drive to play the discs OR a perfect rip of the data files on memory chips? I think the memory chips would be cheaper for them in the long run.

I wouldn't expect a Mini Master System, considering that outside of Europe and Brazil, it didn't sell very well and most people have no nostalgia for it. It just wouldn't make much financial sense to make it.
Regarding later systems like the PS1, considering that a PSP can emulate those games fairly accurately, I'd imagine that the production costs for such a device wouldn't be very high. Storage space might be an issue, considering that the games are much larger than, say, a NES game. And a lot of the big games on PS1 (ex. the FF games, MGS1, etc.) take up multiple discs, which just takes up more space. I can't see a mini-PS2/Xbox/GameCube/Dreamcast happening anytime soon. Emulation for those systems still requires pretty beefy specs, which would drastically ramp up costs to the point where nobody would buy it. The mini-NES sold well because it was relatively cheap, had a lot of games people remember, and was a way to put HD NES games on your TV without investing hundreds of dollars in mods, upscalers, or other hardware. A mini-PS2, by contrast, would be fairly expensive, and the benefit of an HDMI connection (even if it ran the games at a higher resolution like the PS4) wouldn't be significant enough compared to a regular PS2 with component cables. |

Why the heck would Nintendo, Sony or MS deny Sega franchises from being put on thier systems? Just because they were once competitors?
Once Sega stopped producing consoles that's all that mattered. You expected them to hold on to some petty rivalry instead of letting Sonic and others be put on their machines which would make them money? That makes absolutely no sense. I'm sure Sega can make another console if they ever wanted to. Thinking their was some "behind closed doors" agreement just sounds silly. |

I don't think it will ever make it, but a mini-Sega Master System would be pretty cool. I had one while in college (pursuing my B.A.), and had a few games. I had a basketball game for it, and it was very popular in my dorm hall!
![]() I also enjoyed Maze Hunter 3-D (used the SegaScope 3-D glasses) -- very convincing 3D back then, too! |
