I saw this one last night, and for most part it's pretty damn good, probably one of the best built-up action/suspense dramas I've seen in mainstream Indian cinema. Of course Assault on Pt 13 is a major inspiration, but it's not a lazy copy, and I really liked how the events lead to that situation. For the longest time, the tone walks a nice line between being a star vehicle for Karthi (who is in great form here, and his introduction scene is a brilliant subversion of the normally grating manner in which South Indian mass appeal stars are introduced in a movie) and a more gritty movie.

There are no songs or flashback sequences and the film does justice to its large cast of characters. In the second half, there is some flab. A backstory that wasn't needed in the first place, and the hero's superhuman abilities to deal damage while shrugging off multiple stab wounds and other attacks contrast with the more grounded elements of the film.

But on the whole it was a dramatic action film with sufficient ingenuity and chutzpah to make it worth the watch.

I saw KAITHI again on Friday to watch Vikram. Saw Vikram yesterday. Like Kaithi, I can't hear anything in a few scenes.

It is Lokesh Cinematic Universe.

I love both this and Vikram, I just wish we could get discs for these films outside of Japan with English subtitles
