Default Just Lost Our Second SXRD Lamp: Is This Normal?

Since owning our Sony KDS-50A2020 rear projection set, bought new circa 2008 or so, we've only had one replacement lamp put in (after the original blew), and it finally went last night (after having the "end of life" warning message on our screen for well over a year, strangely). We have a home theater company we've dealt with in the past for ceiling speaker installs and stuff like that coming to replace the lamp (they ordered the replacement for us as well), but I wanted to ask if the following seems normal when these lamps go, because I don't remember this happening last time...

When the lamp went out last night, we had a news station on in the background while we were in the kitchen (the wife and I) and suddenly everything stopped -- picture AND sound, and we got the flashing red light on the bottom of the screen. But should SOUND from our cable box have gone out, as well? If it was only the lamp that had blown, why did we lose audio, too?

We have our high def box connected to this TV via component cables and separate left/right analog audio cables, so I don't understand why if the lamp blew, the audio should go out as well...

Anyone else with rear projection sets ever experience this?
