Default Universal players

When I speak of universal players, I’m referring to disc players that can play BD, CD, DVD, and the high-resolution portions of DVD-A and SACD.

My first universal player was the Pioneer 588-A. (This was pre-BD of course.) A fine entry-level player, not very robust sound, but it got me into multichannel music. When that player died, I replaced it with OPPO players, their very first one, one of their last ones, and then finally their first BD player, which I still use today. Going strong, will hopefully last many years. And they sound incredible!

With the news that OPPO will soon cease making new a/v products, I’m forced to look to the future. I own a modest collection of DVD-As and SACDs, and when the day comes that my present OPPO universal player gives up the ghost, I’ll need another universal player. But in this day and age of streaming, I wonder if there will be any such thing as a universal player, at least one that is affordable.

My OPPO BDP-83 is maybe 10 years old. No telling how much longer it may last.

Anyone else thinking along these same lines? Any thoughts on what you plan on doing about it? I’m considering buying a new or refurbished OPPO 203, keeping it in its box, and pull it out the day that my 83 dies. But I dunno. Maybe if there’s no affordable alternative when the day comes, I’ll just sell my DVD-As and SACDs and be done with them—although this option will break my heart a lot. Anyone else wondering what they’ll do?

OR...are there affordable universal players out there I don’t know about?
