Default Moving forward: buying 3D or 4K?

I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum to post this, but I didn't know where else to put it.

I'd like to ask the community for an opinion. Namely, going forward, if you were in my shoes, would you buy 3D versions or 4K versions of movies, given that my situation is as thus:

Setup:
  • 55" 3D 1080p Panasonic Viera TV
  • 3D capable 1080p Panasonic region free BD player
  • Onkyo 5.1 amp with pass-through 1080p signal

So with this setup, if I want to go all out on 4K, I'd need to buy a new TV, new receiver and new BD player. Currently I'm looking at a cost of 3.000 Euro at minimum and that just isn't going to happen. I won't be able to make that jump for the next 3-4 years.

So what should I do? I enjoy 3D from time to time but it seems like that technology is going extinct for home viewing. Since 3D/4K combos aren't a thing, should I keep buying 3D, enjoy it while I can and then buy some of those movies again in 4K, at which point the price will probably have dropped? Or should I buy 4K at full price, watch it in 1080p and just keep the 4K aside for when I do make the jump?

Also, is there a chance that later down the line TV companies will re-insert 3D technology in their 4K setups? At which point I'd still be able to enjoy my 3D blu-rays?

It all seems so confusing and directionless at this point. It seems manufacturers are pushing us to buy 4K and only 4k, but what about those of us who financially can't make the jump for the next 3 years? What are we supposed to do?

Any insight on this? I've held off buying some movies I really like simply because I don't know which version I should buy, but I can't keep holding off for the next 3-4 years, can I?

My wife suggests we keep buying 3D, enjoy 3D and 1080p for the next 3-4 years and then once we have the funds to make the jump to 4K, see how the market is then and either sell off 3D versions and rebuy 4K or keep 3D and rebuy 4K for those movies that I really like.

What is your take on this and are there other members in the same boat as we are?
