Default True HD help..

Ok, So I got my first Blu-Ray with True HD audio encoding (Fifth Element Remastered version), and I can see that my Player (in sig) sees the audio track as True HD.

Now my Onkyo Receiver (605) does not have the LED for True HD on. I have my Panny set to Bitstream. I have HDMI audio out: off on my Onkyo. I have them connected to each other with and HDMI 1.3 cable. What gives?

I did not run the "speaker set up" thing that comes with the Onkyo because I need to build shelves to put the speakers in their permanent places (right now they just sit on the floor spread out around the TV) so I didnt bother messing with that just yet. Could this be why I do not get the advanced audio coming through my Onkyo just yet?

Do you have it on "direct" mode?

Which Panasonic do you have? If it's any one but the BD30, then it can't pass the bitstream, and you have to have the player decode it

Its showing "Dobly Digitial 5.1" and "DVD Direct".

I can see on the audio menu of the Panny of the Fifth Element (Remastered) it says "True HD Multi ch", but nothing on the Onkyo 605 shows me that its playing True HD.

When I set everything to Direct, it sounds like ass. Not all of the speakers get used. When I set the Onkyo to PLIIx (to use all 7.1 to the fullest) everything sounds awesome (as opposed to all those 5.1 track settings).

While its not a huge deal to me (probably because Ive yet to hear a True HD audio track), Id still like to figure out if there is some other issue with my equipment.

Anyone else with both of these get True HD to light up? I have Fifth Element, RE: 1 and 2 as my only True HD titles if I remember correctly, but have only tried FE (RE: box set arrived today before work so I have yet to try those).

well, since the Onkyo is TrueHD capable, I think the problem is in your BD settings...are you sure you set on Bitstream and select the TrueHD track on the disc??

no other reason should it not work...unless in the Onkyo Settings under Default Listening Modes (pg 78 user manual) for TrueHD you have something else set?

If the Onkyo is set right, then the problem is in the BD player.

Everythings set to Bitstream, and Secondary audio is off, as well as the audio out being multi channel on the BD.

I also tried setting everything to direct under audio pref on the Onkyo. Still nothing (and the audio didnt sound nearly as good that way). And yes, when selecting the audio from the player menu, it says True HD on the OSD. For whatever reason the Onkyo just doesnt pick up a True HD signal to trigger the True HD light.

I did notice that the BD does not recognize the sub when it transmits test tones. I dont know if this is an issue, or intentional. It sends a tone to all the other speakers in my 7.1 set up tho.

The only thing I can think of is maybe its because I didnt hook up that little set up mic and run the self set up of the speakers the Onkyo can run. Perhaps there is something it does there that will allow things like True HD.

Yea I have it, but as I said, I put off running that because I need to build shelves to support some of the speakers in various spots in the room to get a good "listening area".

I could just stop being lazy and run it. I can always run it again once the speakers get their permanent homes.

yeah, you should just do a quick run for now...and set it again later...

I would just to know if thats the problem or not.

I doubt that will work. I just got my DMP-BD30 today and I'm having the exact same problem. My 605 refuses to display TrueHD and/or DTS-HD MA. Everything is processed as the base DTS or Dolby 5.1.

I've read in other forums that resetting the devices has worked for some people but I've had no luck with that either. Any other ideas?

Crakin is right...you have to go into the set up menu on the onkyo, and take True HD off of default and set it to True HD...then it should work...or someone lied to you at the store about your cable being a 1.3 cable?

Yeah, I originally had my Onkyo set up that way..

True-HD = True-HD

DTS-HD MA = DTS-HD MA

Both of them were set to Last Valid out of the box..

No dice..

I'm 99% sure it's not cabling either.

I'm calling Panasonic tomorrow and seeing if I get anywhere. I'll keep you updated and thank you guys in advance for doing the same

Angry sucks....

Well, I got off the phone with Onkyo and Panasonic and that was a complete waste of time. Panasonic blames Onkyo and Onkyo customer service is maybe a hair above worthless.

Well, I guess that's a $1000 well spent. I get the same audio formats I was capable of before I got the new player and reciever.

Just got off the phone with Panasonic again and after about 2 hours (literally) I'm still in the same place. Calling back Onkyo now and trying to get a higher up...

I'm curious if the person who started this thread ever solved his problem..

dont know if this is the problem...

High-Def FAQ: Is HDMI 1.3 Really Necessary?

"When HDMI 1.3 arrives, it will allow the new codecs mentioned above to be transmitted in their native bitstream, but only if they were authored in 'Basic' mode (no interactivity). If the soundtrack was authored in Advanced mode, then it cannot be transmitted in undecoded form; decoding in the player is mandatory because of live mixing."

"Currently, Blu-ray discs are authored in Basic mode, since they haven't gotten interactivity yet. As soon as BD Java is up and working, they'll all be authored in Advanced mode too. At that point, what are the decoders in the receivers going to do? Decode the relatively few BD titles that were released before interactivity?"

"...a feature called "Direct Digital Audio Mode." This function serves as a workaround for the Advanced mode bitstream limitation. When activated, the player will transmit the raw audio bitstreams for any of the new high-resolution sound formats to a receiver for decoding, even on Advanced discs. However, it will only transmit the movie soundtrack itself...Some recent Blu-ray players such as the Samsung BD-P1400 and the Panasonic DMP-BD30 have a similar feature."

now, does this "workaround" work for every title? is it implemented in a firmware update or straight out of the box? (have you guys updated firmware anyways?)

I dont know, it just sounds very strange that some people bitstream with the BD30 and Onkyo, and some people cant?
