Default Dark House (Victor Salva) - March 11, 2014

Quote:
When Nick Di Santo learns that his father is not only alive but can possibly reveal the origin of his son's dark gift, he sets out on a trip that takes him to an abandoned mansion he thought only existed in his childhood imagination.
Regardless of all the controversy around Victor, I loved Clownhouse and Jeepers Creepers. Will be checking this one out.

I want this guy to stop making movies. I refuse to see one of my favorite actors' first movie because of Salva's despicable actions. That actor is Sam Rockwell.

I just cannot get past it.

Well I want people to stop bringing up something that happened 25 years ago that has nothing to do with his current movies. If you don't want to watch Clownhouse because of what happened during the production that's your prerogative (I personally think it's a great little 80s flick) but that doesn't mean the man should be banned from ever making a movie again- he went to jail and served his time. Let him do his frickin' job already. Bring on JC3!

"Yeah! Victor Salva's statutory rapes happened 25 years ago! Get over it and let him do his job!"

In all honesty, I think it's perfectly fair (and on topic) to bring this up every time the man or his work is mentioned in any forum. Sort of an internet sex-offenders registration. I can see being weary of it if your a fan. But I think that's the price you'll just have to pay for admiring his work at this point. I can see others not wanting to watch his movies at all because of his past acts. They have the right to decide and the right to know the history.

I don't have a problem with Victor Salva having served his time or with him continuing with his work. But I don't have a problem with someone calling him out for what he's done either. He gets to own those actions for the rest of his life as far as I'm concerned.

I know what you're saying, but how long does someone have to be punished for a crime, when they have already paid their debt to society?

Exactly. That's why I do not own any Woody Allen films.

I would agree on Woody Allen, that man, in my opinion, is worse than Salva. Salva's actions were deplorable and stomach churning, but he at least paid his debt to society and has changed. Allen has gotten off scott free and there is no indication he has abandoned his proclivities.

On the subject, what about Roman Polanski? What he did was also wrong but according to her they were in love. Worse, better, the same?

I really do see both sides. But there are different kinds of punishments for different kinds of crimes. He left his victim's life in an absolute shambles because of what he did. It's tough to move on from that when you know the details.

That said, I greatly admire a number Roman Polanski films, and what he evaded prosecution from was every bit as despicable as what Salva faced the music for. I find Polanski's work too good to completely ignore and Salva's too easy to completely dismiss based on principal.

But my greater point is that you are what you do and it's impossible for me to separate any of these artists from their other actions, even though I truly do believe in rehabilitation and even forgiveness.

I don't know enough about the Woody Allen business to comment.

She has said she has moved on and would like the matter dropped and I would be inclined to honor those wishes at this point. But what I do know is that she was not of consenting age whether she loved him or not and they (there were a few people involved) drugged her and abused her by nearly anyone's definition. Better, worse, I don't really know. All of it is horrible though.

We agree there, and I do not like what he did, but I can't help but like Rosemary's Baby and the Ninth Gate. Does that make me horrible? It's a huge gray area any way you slice it.

I agree with what you're saying, but my comment was as pigheaded and callous as the one preceding it for a reason. It wasn't supposed to be taken seriously by itself. I thought it complimented:

"I want this guy to stop making movies. I refuse to see one of my favorite actors' first movie because of Salva's despicable actions. That actor is Sam Rockwell."

very well.

I am very sorry for having something against child molestation... Especially when a few of the man's later movies feature children (Powder),

Pretty sure she never said they were in love, I think you may be misrembering something. This article on her says that a friend of Polanski and her mother asked her mother on his behalf if he could take pictures of her daughter, she met him about a month before the pictures, and her reaction at the time was "Ew, there’s this guy who’s, like, my size and sort of looks like a ferret. But he’s super-powerful and he wants to photograph me. Me!" And she definitely portrays the sex as non-consensual, though she says that although what he did was wrong, "1977 was a very different time" and she thinks he was treated unfairly by the justice system and "wishes him nothing but a nice life".

Can we skip the details on these Polanski and Salva events please? Lets not talk about the specifics of how things transpired.

You're the one who implied you cared more about Sam Rockwell being in a movie you can't watch because of your own principals then what actually happened to the other kid. lol. A few =/= just one move either dude. I couldn't stop laughing at how old the paperboy actually looked in Rosewood Lane so it's not like he's still casting kids (thankfully).
