I would have thought this was released on blu-ray ages ago.

Too much to hope for both cuts, I assume?

FINALLY. This is one of the few DVDs I have left and was always curious why it never came out here in the States (there was an import/region locked option if I recall right) as the first one was readily available. And I imagine this price will drop, and after waiting this long no way I'm paying that opening week price for it.

These Universal MOD titles rarely see significant price drops. Even the earliest ones are still $17-20.

These minimal effort catalog releases should have been $10 or less like previous runs. A shame they couldn't keep going with the Best Buy exclusive route to keep costs down.

No, it’s actually going to increase in price, so you better hurry.

This is a Universal MOD release.

Here’s what we can expect in every one of these Universal MOD threads:

1: someone will weigh in and tell us why they don’t consider them MOD releases even though they are, in fact MOD releases.

2: it won’t ship before release date or even on release date and people will start speculating that it’s been canceled or delayed and then everyone’s copies will ship like 2 days later.

3: people will complain about the price and say they wish it was a bargain bin Best Buy exclusive.

4: people will complain that it wasn’t licensed to a boutique label.

Repeat for each title.

Universal definitely had a good thing going with the BB run. Even the pre-sale price was only like $9.99 and many of us got them for close to half that each with sales or promotions. I even bought a few others that I was only a casual fan of because they were at a good impulse price point. And boutique-wise, I'd say it's a valid wish given the relative cult status of some of these Universal films. It would have been nice to have new 2k or 4k scans instead of really old masters with applied sharpening, dnr, etc. Given the $20+ price tags on these, release quality of recent titles has hardly warranted such prices and screencaps someone posted from The Wizard thread demonstrated that the blu was no better than the much more compressed iTunes edition. And it's likely Nutty Professor II will be the 2007 hd dvd master with MPEG-4 and DTS-HD instead of VC-1 and TrueHD.

You forgot about "Are these burned, or are they pressed?"

They do, but the Blu-rays like Warner Archive are pressed discs. Most of the DVDs are DVD-Rs except some of the TV series which are pressed.

I'd pick up a lot of these catalog Universal titles for $10 or less like the batches that were Best Buy Exclusives, but bare bones old transfers for $20+ is not that appealing to me. Maybe eventually I'll pick these up, but there are a lot better films being released with extras and new transfers for the same or less. Why did they quit doing the $10 releases?

Based on...?

In the real world you look at the fact that the Best Buy exclusive wave was one-and-done and you compare that with the fact that Universal is currently on their 4th or 5th wave of these MOD releases and you arrive at the opposite conclusion.

Those initial BB-exclusive releases are still for sale for around $9.99 each through multiple major retailers like BB, Target, Amazon, WW; they were never $20+.
