Disney Monsters, Inc. 3 (Pixar)

Quote:
Monsters, Inc. director talks sequel rumors ...

Monsters, Inc. celebrating its 15th anniversary this week, EW had to get in touch with resident Pixar filmmaker Pete Docter, who directed the latter and has been an integral story trust member on the Toy Story franchise.

While Docter offered up a slew of stories about the early production of Monsters (which you can look forward to reading Wednesday on EW.com ), he also commented on whether audiences could ever expect to see another adventure for the film’s main monster duo, Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sulley (John Goodman). The pair did get a second film — 2013’s prequel, Monsters University — so Mike and Sulley’s journeys beyond the events of Monsters, Inc. are still rife for exploration.

“You never say never — who knows what will happen?” Docter says. “We purposely went with a prequel for Monsters University because we didn’t want to answer some of the questions about what happens to Boo, and how does she grow up, and things like that. It would have to be really compelling, which is hopefully the benchmark for all of our sequels, anyway.”

The internet has generated its fair share of completely unfounded rumors about a purported Monsters, Inc. 3, but the most frequent speculation always seems to come back to Boo, the adorable babbling toddler from the first film. For one reason or another, fans seem to want an update on whereabouts (she’d be around high school age by now). Strangely enough, such a Boo-focused sequel would actually return the Monsters, Inc. story to one of its earliest, albeit scrapped, pitches: an adult interacts with the monsters of his youth. “Part of that idea was like a Peter Pan-type thing, where [Wendy] had been visited by Peter Pan as a kid and had sort of half-forgotten who he was,” Docter explains.

But, to reiterate, a Monsters, Inc. sequel is not nigh, nor is it even on the table right now at Pixar, which has three sequels in development and only originals planned after that. Docter’s next directorial effort is an original story, and since Pixar favors sequels only when a film’s director is involved, he hasn’t embarked on a five-year-journey follow-up to Monsters Inc. — or even Inside Out 2 for that matter.

So, no need to panic just yet. However ... Every single time there's rumor and a Pixar veteran stated a certain sequel isn't planned yet, while talking about it anyway, sharing some ideas, it didn't take very long for the studio to announce the sequel is indeed on the table. Last examples were Finding Dory, Cars 3 and Toy Story 4.

So, what do you guys thing? Would you like to see what happened to Boo?

EDIT: Clearly, I didn't read the OP.

As for wanting a sequel? Absolutely not. Monsters U was hot garbage.

Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University are among the few Pixar movies I like. If they could come up with something as good as both of those, I'd definitely be down for more with Mike and Sully.

I still think Monsters, Inc. is one of the studio's best movies. While the well rated Monsters University wasn't the story everyone wanted to see, it's far from a bad movie in any way. As for 'The Sequel Machine', I believe Pixar is by far the last movie studio on earth that should be called like that in a negative way, for obvious reasons. In Pixar we trust ... And I'm sure they won't do it before finding the right angle, a good story and making the best of it. And no, I don't think "Cars 2" is a valid argument to be against it, since the quality of other sequels they made was quite high. So, Monsters 3 doesn't need to happen, imo. But if it happens, I will be curious for the end result in a positive way.

Pixar hasn't done anything worth my while since UP. They seem to have completely run out of original ideas.

I would love to see more animated movies by ILM like Rango, now that was awesome.

It seems like Pixar sorely missed Joe Ranft. Since he died, Pixar the main Pixar guys hasn't sat down to brainstorm ideas.

I hope there isn't a sequel to Monsters, Inc.
It had a perfect ending and it's best left to the audience to make up their own conclusion.

Just like The Incredibles. Really didn't need a sequel for that one.

It's like I've been saying, that incredible Pixar magic has faded since they did all the movies they came up with that time they all sat down together at a cafe(I think it was a cafe). Makes sense, pretty much impossible to bat 1.000, no matter who they are.

Have to agree to disagree there.

If there was one Pixar movie that needed a sequel, it was The Incredibles.

What did NOT need a sequel, however, was Cars.

They are not out of original ideas at all. None of their movies was an original idea to begin with ... It's what they did with the ideas and how inventive they were with it that made Pixar great There are 4 original titles planned.

Up, Wall*E, and Ratatouille were innovative and unique.

Yeah. Cars is getting sequels only because of the merchandising. They are selling better than the movie itself for some reason.

If it happens, it needs to be called Monsters Inc. 2 because Monsters U was a prequel and not a sequel.

Would be up for this. Pixar are hit and miss with me I hated Inside Out but liked The Good Dinosaur. I even liked Finding Dory despite hating Finding Nemo. But please Pixar leave Cars alone both films were not very good at all. The one Pixar film I would love to get a sequel would be A Bug's Life I enjoyed that one a lot.
