Default This does not compute!!!

Two very different opinions on the Panasonic

There were 8 of us. We used the following software: Training Day, Corpse Bride, and Blazing Saddles. We also used the Incredibles DVD.

Nobody could tell the difference between the Samsung unit and the Panasonic when displayed on either display in PQ or AQ. Didn't matter the title.

On the DVD, 5 out of 8 preferred the Samsung.

When comparing the Panasonic to the HD-DVD player (in this case the X1): Nobody could tell a difference in PQ. In AQ it was unanimously decided that the Toshiba sounded better.

The Toshiba also without any doubt was the better DVD player, unanimously.

For $1,300 the Panasonic is an overpriced unit. It just doesn't have anything going for it but its Analog outputs. The remote was difficult to use as well, but that is purely nit-picking.

We threw in the 5th element just to see... and it's the disc not the player. It looked like crap on the Panasonic too.

The Panasonic just isn't better than the Samsung. We had no idea which unit we were viewing. We left the room between units being turned on so we wouldn't know which was which by the menu systems. All we did was walk in while it was playing a scene, were told it was Unit A, etc. It was a well run test.

It's good gear, and it should be noted runs as well as the Samsung right out of the Box. There is no reason to get a firmware update or anything. It has run solidly in every aspect of viewing.

It is my opinion as it is the opinion of others that the Panasonic unit is built slightly better than the Samsung and appears at first glance much more reliable. Is that worth $300?

I don't know. We have so far sold ZERO, and that was after contacting about 200 people who'd left contact information for when it finally came out. 6 people today looked at it and 4 bought the Toshiba. We're now out of Toshibas and need more.

There just isn't a real world scenario right now that has us pointing consumers to BD. So far the Samsung and Panasonic just aren't the great deal that the Toshiba is. If they were priced the same I'd advise people to buy BD and keep their DVD player as their DVD player.
I know it all boils down to opinions and how everyone has one, but sheesh this is a hard decision to make, and these reviews ARE NOT HELPING!!!

I know I know.... I checked the post history of the second guy and its shaddy at the very least. Hes boycotting Fox and refusing to sell Sony products in his store????
Although by his own words, PQ is the same between BD and HD-DVD. He's saying AQ is better on the Toshiba but doesnt say how he tested it... Did he use Tru-HD for Toshiba and plain old DD for for BD?????
In my opinion for $300 more I would get the Panasonic for those advanced audio codecs, but you guys are saying your getting it for $600-$700????Samsung might be the better choice than for half the price... Now on the other hand if the Panny had 1.3?????

Me??? Im happy with my choice of the Samsung and I will upgrade in a year. I also would wait for a few more reviews to start rolling in too!!!!

Default This indeed, does not compute

I find it particulary interesting for me, that after all this Blu-ray sucks bashing,

Quote:

So... Samsung = Panasonic = Toshiba

So... Blu-ray PQ quality = HD DVD PQ quality

(But of course it all boils down to: money! We should choose a whole new format over the other just because "one" player, "the" only player in that format that exists (the Toshiba), is cheap)

Anyway, if the Samsung = the Panasonic = the Toshiba in PQ, why have we been hearing all this blabbering about Blu-ray not being as good as HD DVD from all the HD DVD supporters till one ends up deaf? Wasn't HD DVD so superior that it was obvious and now turns out the truth is "nobody could tell a difference"? Have they been watching Blu-rays with "Soft" brand sunglases? What's the reason? Money? (Interests)

*puts on ABBA

If I had a little money

in a rich man's world

I don't particularly care for the soft look of the Pearl pj....perhaps a comparison on a 1080p dlp projector which shows more detail, sharpness and pop.....is in order on at least a 110" screen.

Don't take this the wrong way, but are you folks really going to get this upset because a couple of random and anonymous forumers on the Internet somewhere post differing opinions on something, especially a forum like AVS, which we know is riddled with biased and agenda ridden people to begin with?

This is why I keep recommending to everyone: Spend less time there. A lot less.

You'll simply be better off for it.

Well, it would be nice if there was more of a concensus, especially since the Panasonic player isn't widely released yet and my 1300 bucks could be spent elsewhere!

I don't think you will find much of a consensus amongst people mainly eager to discredit Blu-ray as a format. I think you will have to wait for serious reviews from the (supposedly) unbiased professionals.

For anyone that gets one, does it list the codec of the disc being played? So far on the Toshiba's seem to do that.

Ultimately, that is the only way to make a proper determination for yourself.

If someone wants to see clear difference between Samsung and Pansonic, the best title for the comparison is The Great Raid, in my opinion. All the fine details/tiny grain movement are just wiped away on current Samsung and this makes picture noiseless, sterile look (aka soft looks). I've never seen a Warner title that maintains such level of clarity and resolution neither on their HD DVD nor BD titles.

I haven't watched new Sony Pearl but I know what Sony Ruby does look. For my eyes, Ruby does not have the reference PQ level. Although its color and smooth looking are good, however, it's softer, less contrast than well-maid 1080p plasma like Pioneer 50" 1080p PRO-FHD1 and Panasonic 65" 1080p TH-65PX600. Those plasmas provide more clarity, sharper and pop image. If the Pearl has similar characteristics of the Ruby, it may degrade the PQ level.

BTW, I had a great oppotunity to watch a prototype 1080p LCD projector which will be available this holiday season. There was a setup comparing new 1080p projector, their former 720p projector and Sony Ruby. The new model looked terrific! Very sharp and vivid color and contrast. Ruby just lost its face because of lack of contrast and sharpness, and 720p projector just looked like SD! There was a huge difference between this new 1080p and former 720p model. I really want to have this...

Although I am currently looking at the Optoma H-81 1080P at the top of my list until the others get released....I will be checking out the lcd 1080p pj's also as they seem to be arriving sooner than the other dlp pj's that are coming.

So was it the Mitshubishi or the Panasonic 1080p lcd pj you saw....or something else?
