Default XBox One X as a 4k Blu-ray Player

I was wondering how an XBox One X is as a 4k blu-ray player?

Its not very good. There are reports that it still has the same issues that plagued the Xbox One S during 4k Blu-ray movie playback. If you are going to use it mostly to watch movies, its a waste of money. You're better off getting a dedicated 4k bluray player such as the Sony X800.

If you want the most powerful videogame system to play the highest quality videogames, then get a Xbox One X (plus its good for casual movie watching). However for one that is not into videogames a OPPO UDP-203 or Sony UDP-X800 would be a better choice.

I am trying to explain the benefits of a dedicated player versus the One X and One S in the Xbox Reddit, as everyone is like they are identical, it's just a digital signal, your an idiot. Anyone care to take a rip from an AV perspective?

When playing native 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs with only HDR10, all 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players should have the exact same picture and sound quality. However the OPPO UDP-203/UDP-205 will offer better picture quality then any other Blu-ray player on the market when a Dolby Vision HDR encoded 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc is played, since Dolby Vision HDR is exclusive to OPPO Digital in the year 2017 so far (Plus one other very expensive high-end brand that is based on the OPPO hardware design). For those that need it the OPPO UDP-203/UDP-205 have 7.1 analog audio outputs.

The main difference in 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players when it comes to picture quality is when one tries to play standard 1080P Blu-ray discs, 1080i Blu-ray discs, 720P Blu-ray discs, and 480i DVD discs. Some 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players do a much better job upscaling or downscaling the video image.

There is also stability issues and some companies that offer timely and quality firmware updates. The OPPO, Sony, and Panasonic Blu-ray players are very reliable with firmware updates over several years to install the latest encryption keys for new releases. Some players like OPPO has a much better build quality. Panasonic and Sony also have good build quality when compared to a $50 Blu-ray player.

If one does not like the XBOX One X for movie watching with Blu-ray discs, they can always latter on purchase a standalone 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Some people are happy with their XBOX One S they currently own when playing Blu-ray discs. Those that are not buy a standalone Blu-ray player also.

Forbes just shart all over the X as a 4k player.

Yeah, but it is Forbes. Someone on the Yahoo page ripped into the article pretty good for using poor grammar I use my One as a BD player, but think when I make the leap to UHD I'm getting a stand alone player and use my X or whatever next gen console I get as a gaming console.

Can definitely confirm the issue of the 4K UHD blacks/everything being too 'bright' on the Xbox One X (tested Dredd, Planet Earth II). Hopefully will be fixed w/ patch.

The only issue I’ve run into is I cannot get Dolby Atmos to work at all. Granted the console isn’t connected to home theater equipment (not even a sound bar), but my LG C7 supports Atmos so it should work.

Sorry if I'm being thick, but what benefit would you get from Atmos if it's just coming through your TV speakers? Surely any lossless 2.0 would do the job just fine?

I'm not particularly fussed about it, as I mentioned I'm not connected to any decent audio equipment so it would be some sort of virtual surround anyway. You're not being thick, it's just something I noticed about Xbox One X as a UHD player in my particular set up. When Atmos lights up on Vudu or Netflix (WebOS apps) it sort of frustrates me that it's not working via Xbox.

The 4K HDR black level fix is live for those who are in the Xbox Insider program. Blacks are inky black again! The update will be live for everyone else before the end of the week. Probably tomorrow.

With that said, as someone who owns both an Oppo UDP-203 and an Xbox One X, the difference between the two is minimal at best.

The main differences are that the Oppo is dead silent, whereas the Xbox One X is quiet, but you can hear a slight whir. The Oppo also supports Dolby Vision, whereas the Xbox One X does not. The build quality, being aluminum, is arguably superior on the Oppo as well. Aesthetics are down to individual preference. The Oppo looks a little bit more traditional, whereas the Xbox One X looks modern and sleek.

If you have an HDR10 TV, I don't see any reason to opt for the Oppo over the XB1X. The picture/sound quality will be identical for 4K UHDs.

I really think that a lot of this talk of the XB1X being a subpar UHD player comes from those trying to justify their $550 standalone player purchase.

Yeah, as has been discussed in this thread, the fix is already out for beta subscribers and will be live for everyone else in the next couple days.

Errr no. The XBOX 1 will never compete with an Oppo, which has far superior picture quality. I've had every 4k bluray player including the Xbox 1 except the Sony and the Oppo was by far the best one for picture quality, the Xbox was worse than the original Samsung 4k. I went through a long journey to find the Oppo and the picture quality is the best of them all.

That's not the case at all. The reason I think the Oppo is better is because I've tried all the original bluray players including the Xbox 1 except the Sony and none of them were a patch on the Oppo. I justify it by the picture quality I see not the price. So don't brandish all of us with the same brush Thankyou.

Not sure why you responded with two different responses from the same account...

Just about every single professional reviewer in the world disagrees with you, but okay. PQ is more-or-less identical for all 4K UHD players.

If you were talking about 1080p blu-ray upscaling, you might have an argument, but not with 4K discs.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around how one player can have a better picture playing native 4k UHD bluray as it is a digital format (reading 1's and 0's). I can see how one player can upscale better than another. Can someone please spell it out for me?
