A few questions for the techies. I've posted some recent threads about getting my vhs tapes digitized. I've decided to do this with software through the computer. It seems I've come across some things on you tube that I have on vhs aslo. My question is which would be the better quality? I've seen different videos on you tube that I need vary from 240 to 1080p. What I don't know is what will my vhs input be captured at going into the computer? And there's also the condition of the vhs tape itself. 99% of those have only ever been played one time though. So I hope I made my questions understandable as I'm just a novice pretty much. I just want the items that come from vhs to look as good as they can on my HDTV. Thanks again in advance for any help.

How the quality is going to end up depends very much on the VCR. If you can, get one of the Panasonics or JVC machines that have a Time Base Corrector (TBC) in them. You will pay a lot for these on eBay, but maybe you can find one in a yard/garage sale somewhere?
If a TBC VCR is not possible, you can get good results running a standard VCR through a DVD recorder (Panasonic/Toshiba/JVC/Phillips machines are often recommended, but error correction is model dependent). If you want to record with your pc, then the DVD recorder will do some processing and pass the signal through. Quality will also be dependent on your capture solution. Is it a USB stick, a PCI card, an external box (Elgato, Hauppage and others make these)? Are you capturing 480i/576i or are you upscaling and capturing to 720/1080p? Check out Videohelp and Digitalfaq, great sites with a lot of valuable info. Hope that helps to get you started. ![]() |
