Post First Man (2018)

Ryan Gosling, Damien Chazelle to Reteam on Neil Armstrong Biopic

Quote:
Oscar-nominated director Damien Chazelle and his “La La Land” star Ryan Gosling are officially set to reteam on Chazelle’s Neil Armstrong biopic “First Man” for Universal Pictures.

Chazelle is directing a script by Oscar-winning “Spotlight” scribe Josh Singer. Previously reports said that Gosling was the choice for the role but at the time a script was still being written and no formal offer had been delivered.

Sources now tell Variety that a deal is closed for Gosling to star and it is likely that the film will shoot in early 2017.

The pic is based on James Hansen’s biography “First Man: A Life Of Neil A. Armstrong” and tells the story of NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969. A visceral, first-person account, the movie will explore the sacrifices and the cost — on Armstrong and on America — of one of the most dangerous space missions in history. Chazelle boarded the pic in 2015 after it had originated at Warner Bros. with Clint Eastwood planning to direct in produce. Temple Hill partners Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen are producing.

Isaac Klausner will executive produce. Hansen is attached to co-produce.

Universal’s VP of Production Sara Scott will oversee the project for the studio.

Chazelle and Gosling are striking while the iron is hot with the box-office and critical acclaim of “La La Land.” The pic leads all films in Golden Globe nominations and also landed Gosling and co-star Emma Stone SAG noms. The pic has also earned 2016’s highest per-screen average for any movie to be released in less then 10 theaters (it’s now open wide).

Chazelle is repped by WME, manager Gary Ungar of Exile Entertainment, and attorney Don Steele of Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush & Kaller, L.L.P.

Gosling is repped by UTA, LBI Entertainment, Anonymous Content, and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern.

Don't know how well Chazelle will suit this story. This seems quite plain for the guy who's practically exploding at the moment.

The expectations being so high, this is bound to be a letdown. But looking forward to it regardless.

I am all over this!

Just hope the budget is big enough that they have some good space scenes.

Would be a bit disappointed if it all takes place on the ground leading up to the big launch.

Would very much like to see a realistic depiction of the first moon landing.

Oops...did I just spoil something?

A very different kind of film for Chazelle, but I want to see him step out of his comfort zone a bit. Looking forward to it.

Honestly not that interested in an Armstrong biopic for whatever reason, but I'm on board for anything Chazelle is doing

Jazz in Space. More preferable than any more godawful disco music, am I right, Damon?

Damien Chazelle knocked it out of the park with Whiplash and La La Land so I'll be all over seeing this one.

Neil Armstrong Biopic First Man Release Date Annnounced
By Max Evry on March 7, 2017

Neil Armstrong biopic First Man release date annnounced

Universal Pictures has announced the release date for their Neil Armstrong biopic First Man, which will re-team La La Land director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling. Filming is expected to start in early 2017 for an October 12, 2018 release date, where First Man currently has no other competition.

The film is based on James Hansen’s biography “First Man: A Life Of Neil A. Armstrong,” which is described as follows:

When Apollo 11 touched down on the moon’s surface in 1969, the first man on the moon became a legend. In First Man, Hansen explores the life of Neil Armstrong. Based on over fifty hours of interviews with the intensely private Armstrong, who also gave Hansen exclusive access to private documents and family sources, this “magnificent panorama of the second half of the American twentieth century” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) is an unparalleled biography of an American icon.

Upon his return to earth, Armstrong was honored and celebrated for his monumental achievement. He was also—as James R. Hansen reveals in this fascinating and important biography—misunderstood. Armstrong’s accomplishments as engineer, test pilot, and astronaut have long been a matter of record, but Hansen’s unprecedented access to private documents and unpublished sources and his interviews with more than 125 subjects (including more than fifty hours with Armstrong himself) yield this first in-depth analysis of an elusive American celebrity still renowned the world over.

In a riveting narrative filled with revelations, Hansen vividly recreates Armstrong’s career in flying, from his seventy-eight combat missions as a naval aviator flying over North Korea to his formative transatmospheric flights in the rocket-powered X-15 to his piloting Gemini VIII to the first-ever docking in space. These milestones made it seem, as Armstrong’s mother Viola memorably put it, “as if from the very moment he was born—farther back still—that our son was somehow destined for the Apollo 11 mission.”

For a pilot who cared more about flying to the Moon than he did about walking on it, Hansen asserts, Armstrong’s storied vocation exacted a dear personal toll, paid in kind by his wife and children. For the forty-five years since the Moon landing, rumors have swirled around Armstrong concerning his dreams of space travel, his religious beliefs, and his private life.

In a penetrating exploration of American hero worship, Hansen addresses the complex legacy of the First Man, as an astronaut and as an individual. In First Man, the personal, technological, epic, and iconic blend to form the portrait of a great but reluctant hero who will forever be known as history’s most famous space traveler.

On the heels of their six-time Academy Award-winning smash, La La Land, Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling reteam for Universal Pictures’ First Man, the riveting story of NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969. A visceral, first-person account, based on the book by James R. Hansen, the movie will explore the sacrifices and the cost—on Armstrong and on the nation—of one of the most dangerous missions in history.

Written by Academy Award winner Josh Singer (Spotlight), the drama will be produced by Wyck Godfrey & Marty Bowen (The Twilight Saga, The Fault in Our Stars) through their Temple Hill Entertainment banner, alongside Chazelle and Gosling. Isaac Klausner (The Fault in Our Stars) will executive produce. DreamWorks Pictures will co-finance the film.

Sounds like a project completely different from Chazelle's last two films, but it involves him and Ryan Gosling, so it's safe to say I'm in 100%.

I like Corey Stoll, but let's face it his forté is playing dicks. I wonder what it feel's like to be told he's the guy the filmmaker's thought will best represent you in a biography!
