Default Ghostbusters animated film, shared universe planned for 2019/2020

Ivan Reitman Hopes to Have a ‘Ghostbusters’ Animated Movie in Theaters by 2019 or 2020

Quote:
Sony, in their sheer desperation to have any viable IPs that can berth long-running franchises, put a lot on Ghostbusters’ shoulders. Before Paul Feig’s reboot was even in theaters, there was word on an animated movie and a spinoff featuring Chris Pratt and Channing Tatum.

Unfortunately, Feig’s Ghostbusters failed to reboot the franchise at the level the studio wanted. Producer Ivan Reitman spoke to io9 about the film coming up short at the box office:

“We certainly would’ve loved to have a larger hit,” Reitman, who produced the new movie, told io9. “But considering the last film was almost 30 years ago, it really did extremely well. I think the film cost too much, frankly, and that’s the real issue. I personally had other points of view in terms of where the film should go and it was kind of a continuous conversation with Paul [Feig] about that. But Paul was the filmmaker on this one and he’s a very talented director. I wanted to give him enough room to do the film he thought it should be.”

However, Reitman hasn’t given up on more Ghostbusters stuff. While promoting the new Ghostbusters VR experience, Ghostbusters VR: Now Hiring, he provided an update on where they’re at with new feature films:

“We jumped into an animated film [after the last movie] and we are developing live-action films,” Reitman said. “I want to bring all these stories together as a universe that makes sense within itself. Part of my job right now is to do that.”

He hopes the animated film will be in theaters in either 2019 or 2020 but can’t say for sure. “It depends on on how fast we can get it all together,” he said. “It’s hard to make an animated film.” Rather unsurprisingly, Reitman remained tight-lipped about the live-action films.

2016 Ghostbusters was pure garbage. It wasn't funny and it just lacked any charm that the original two movies hold.

If I'm honest I don't entirely understand why it was needed to be "feminized" with a female cast the way it was, especially since the first two movies were about Dana, not to mention the "God" was actually female also.

Putting all of that aside, I hope that this animated feature can bring back the charm and the wit from the old movies and make something good out of it, though I'm not going to hold my breath, even more if Feig has any involvement.

Wow this is the first real news since even before the movie released. I'm glad they still plan to do some kind of shared universe. Hopefully it won't turn into some outrageous on/off situation again.

I don't really know how a shared universe would work unless every Ghostbusters team is in an alternate universe and are brought together through opening dimensions (Dan Aykroyd talked about a dimensions plot a few years ago)

I would personally have a new team come up and meet the 2016 team in the same world and somehow enter another dimension where they all meet the remaining original Ghostbusters.

Since they made cameos the joke could be that in our world you're my uncle, a cab driver and skeptic. Their alternate universe selves.

Ghostbusters 2016 was good, I really enjoyed it. That gross was surprisingly low though so I'm didn't expect them to still be planning more live action movies.

I'm glad Ivan got the last laugh on this, Paul Feig should never have touched Ghostbusters. I hope Ivan gets to make the next features they way he wants to, only issue I see is Murray getting on board, I had head he played a big part in a third Ghostbusters getting delayed.

Honestly I genuinely thought there was a big audience for more live action Ghosbusters movies. I can't believed the recent one did so badly at the box office. Regardless of anyone's opinions of the actual movie, I was sure the name alone was enough to get audiences to turn up. Ivan is being very diplomatic when talking about it but less than $200Mil worldwide is ridiculous for a movie where the studio had big aspirations and for a brand that is well known the world over. I can't see any future live action movies doing much better now as it just seems like the audience is completely apathetic to it.

I personally believe that if Ivan wasn't pushed aside to producer and helmed the project, it would have done a lot better or even if he had dealt with a director that didn't decide to hijack the whole thing and turn it into his own agenda. I still think that if done right, a live action Ghostbusters can be a hit, the 2016 film, wasn't done right, it was just used as a platform for an agenda.

I did bad because they turned a beloved brand into a gimmick. Simple as that. If the director wanted to prove so bad that women can catch ghosts he could've just made an original film that cost the amount of his other movies and been cool.

I don't know why they thought a movie then a cartoon that target audience was boys that got changed to all females was going to sit well with a large number of it's fanbase. It was just silly and uneeded.

They had Chris Pratt and Channing Tatum lined up for the animated movie? If they used them instead of Melissa McCarthy and Leslie Jones and had Ivan Reitman directing then the 2016 movie would have been a much bigger hit than it was. Heck i would have watched it in the cinema even!

Ghostbusters was good but even the 2nd seemed like they didn't try. Vigo sounded cool but the showdown was lame. I like a lot of the film but because of the actors. The cartoon OG was fun. Heck, the game was a great 3rd continuation of the story. I think the audience is gone to be honest. The 2016 one was a disservice and probably lost more of an audience just like the terminator franchise.

I enjoyed the 2016 film - as did pretty much all kids I've met who saw it. I thought it was a fun blockbuster - better than G2. t's just a shame they couldn't tie it more into the canon, and that Feig relies too heavily on his cast ad-libbing when really the script needed a fine tune.

I don't see casting females as Ghostbusters to be a gimmick at all, I cannot understand that way of thinking in any way. If you're saying it bombed because young boys don't like seeing females in the roles then fair enough, I can't argue that either way as I don't really know what my opinion on that specific matter is but in no way did I see anything about the 2016 movie as being gimmicky.

I kind of already covered this in my previous post but I really don't see any agenda in GB 2016 whatsoever. It just wants to be a light and fun comedy fantasy like the previous movies. The style of comedy is very different yes, but I see no agenda at all.

You didn't see all the backlash and feminists and bloggers caping for it? Sony knew what they were doing and it failed. They passed on every aspect of it being a gimmick except for doing good business.

Yeah I saw all of it, it was hard to miss! lol. I'm saying I disagree with it being a gimmick, I don't see simply casting females in lead roles in a movie as being a gimmick at all.
