I came close to just picking up Ran on DVD during the B&N half-off Criterion sale, but I ultimately decided to wait on the Lionsgate Blu-ray edition. According to blu-ray.com's review for the UK release, the transfer is better than Criterion's SD-DVD. |

I've never owned it, so if my choices are between the Criterion SD-DVD and the Lionsgate Blu-ray, I'm going to have to go with the Blu-ray. If it were a matter of me already owning it on DVD and having to decide whether or not to upgrade, I would stick with the DVD. |

I thought for sure you imported the UK release! I am very happy with my copy, but the US release will be the same which is cool. :-) Plus it will cost you a lot less than importing it. Curious to see which stores will stock the titles, like Barnes & Noble, maybe Best Buy, you never know with them.

Well you have something good to look forward to, still sad Criterion isn't releasing it. It seemed to get released with a good enough transfer and high bit rate so I can't complain. I still have the Criterion 2 Disc DVD set for those extras, like the commentary. |

![]() A movie as magnificent as Akira Kurosawa's Ran deserves MUCH better treatment than this... Last edited by GGX; 01-26-2010 at 12:18 AM. |

Actually, it appears that Studio Canal really did not do much with the transfer - which is one of the reasons why this release is problematic. It seems to me that the transfer they used was prepared quite some time ago, with SDVD in mind. Unfortunately, a lot of Kurosawa's films require special attention - particularly as far as color-timing is concerned. Additionally, while I have no doubts that a possible Criterion release would have been far more satisfying, I think that there would have been a number of limitations with it as well. Judging by how Criterion handled Kagemusha, it is obvious to me that Kurosawa's films, and specifically his color films, could be quite challenging when preparing for BD release. This said, had the severe edge-enhancement been addressed and some of the stronger denoising avoided, Ran would have looked a lot better. Regardless, thus far the Studio Canal Collection has been terrific, and I hope to see as many classic films channeled through it as possible. Each single disc has been well worth getting, including Ran. Pro-B |

Otherwise I'm happy with what I've seen/heard with the Studio Canal Collection. It's just to bad that the one film that means the most to me out of all of the one's announced and released has been botched. |
